The ant 2 hits cinemas on April 25, giving us more of the charged dynamic between Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. We see it as a perfect excuse to revisit some of our top dynamic duos from the Warner Bros. catalogue.
Sam and Frodo: This is an unlikely pair to carry the burden of the One Ring. Two hobbits, from humble origins in The Shire, are not who you’d expect to decide the fate of Middle Earth. Originally ed by the wider fellowship, they eventually go their own way – facing orcs, giant spiders, Gollum, and whatever Mordor throws at them. Facing all of this together. Without Sam, Frodo wouldn’t have succeeded, and without Frodo, Sam would still be a simple gardener.
Max and Furiosa: Unlike Sam and Frodo, this pair is exactly who you’d expect to find in the wasteland. They’re rugged, usually found covered in dirt, and are at home behind the wheel of whatever gas guzzling vehicle they can find. Originally at odds, their encounter came when Max was chained up to be used as a living ‘bloodbag’ for the war party, led by Furiosa. But as events unfold, they increasingly find themselves aligned, relying on each other to fight off Immortan Joe and his goons. Until by the end of the film they see eye to eye, literally.
Godzilla and Kong: Similarly to Max and Furiosa, Godzilla and Kong start off as rivals. Godzilla, a colossal prehistoric reptile, awakened and empowered by nuclear testing. Kong, a titanic gorilla residing on the aptly named Skull Island. This is how we’re introduced to this iconic pair in the Monsterverse, but after a few films – and one aircraft carrier based battle – they seem to have come to an understanding. Godzilla is a lumbering force of nature, destroying everything and anything in his path, but Kong is more agile, jumping from building to building and even wielding an axe. It’s an unlikely pair, but it’s hard to deny it’s not cinematic dynamite.
Sherlock and Watson: Lets change gears from the world of gargantuan titans to Victorian London and examine Guy Ritchie’s take on this iconic detective duo. In this adaptation, Holmes is not just a brilliant detective, but a quirky, eccentric figure with a bit of a rough edge. Watson is his grounding force, the pragmatic foil to Holmes' eccentricity. Holmes’ brilliance and instinctual genius are complemented by Watson’s more practical approach to life. Their relationship is built on mutual respect, with a healthy dose of friction, humour, and emotional depth.
Christian and Braxton: Working on a slightly different side of the law to Sherlock and Watson, we have Braxton, a hardened hitman, and Christian, a brilliant ant with lethal skills - the estranged brothers. Their father's harsh training forged them into formidable individuals, but also drove a wedge between them. Initially at odds, their reunion in "The ant" is fraught with tension and unresolved emotions. Yet, as the story unfolds, their bond as brothers resurfaces, revealing a deep connection that transcends their differences (alongside a lot of brotherly bullying, of course).
Honourable mentions: No discussion of dynamic duos is complete without Batman & Robin. They’re iconic for a reason and whatever incarnation always works perfectly!
