Amazing cast, asinine script, appalling characters. I thought Gleeson was a creep in Ex Machina, but he’s downright lovable in that compared to the entitled stalker we see here.

[Friday I’m In Love #1.]

Thought I’d start a new project to correct a major blind spot in my film viewing: romance films. Began with Amélie, which was a miscalculation. (“Whimsical” is not a compliment as far as I’m concerned.) Will revisit in, say, a year to see if my tolerance has improved, but right now this is Not For Me.

Song of the Week is the vocal version of “Les Jours tristes” (music by Yann Tiersen, lyrics by Neil Hannon), which perfectly encapsulates Amélie's approach, and epitomizes everything I disliked about the film.
