Dune: Part Two

Denis Villeneuve remains the king of spectacle, his pure unadulterated ability to command visual language and convey his story in this medium is truly one of a kind.

The scope and magnitude of everything on screen ushered in a feeling of awe throughout my entire cinema. It’s so rare to feel the weight and scale of something like Dune without being taken out of it by some dodgy CGI or some strange directorial choice but here Denis knows the pure visuals and the soundscape are key.

At times I found myself begging for more from a narrative and character perspective, ultimately Denis’s bigger films often leave me feeling this way, his spectacle over emotion style can leave me cold. Though here he is able to grab hold of you and never let you go with a relentless aura and immersive magic that is so transportive 3 hours ed in minutes.

Chalamet, Zendaya and Butler show why they are three of the great emerging actors of their age bracket and command their leading roles with grace and unique quality.

Dune 2 for me is a massive success and helped me understand Denis’s vision for the medium more so than any of his films since Arrival. Set to be a modern blockbuster classic undoubtedly. I think I will always prefer spectacle when it is paired with genuine human emotion and empathy like in Lord of the Rings but you can’t help but ire the way Denis just says fuck it, and demonstrates the power of pure visual cinema.
