When responding to the criticism of the lack of color in Wicked, director Jon M. Chu stated; “I mean, there’s color all over it. I think what we wanted to do was immerse people into Oz, to make it a real place.” “Because if it was a fake place, if it was a dream in someone’s mind, then the real relationships and the stakes that these two girls are going through wouldn’t feel real.”

A very close family member of mine recently ed away from cancer. It’s a strange grief, not wanting the person to suffer, but wishing there was anything you can do to have them back. In this film the outcome may seem inevitable, but the love that’s shared is so real, so incredibly genuine that it still works. Really loved this one, came at a necessary time for me.
Originally, I pictured Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to be a giant piece of nostalgia bait; this mixed with Burtons recent track record had me extremely worried. Luckily, this sequel feels like a logical conclusion to the first, and cements its place as a worthy sequel. Saw this a few hours ago and this films visuals haven’t left my mind since; equally disturbing as they are compelling. A nightmare, feels like I’m drowning in the world’s deepest ocean. Nostalgia as a drug; themes of identity, sexuality and mental health all explored with such creativity and maturity.
