Yes it is that good.
This generations Seven Samurai. This generations Empire Strikes Back. This generations Return of the King.
On a technical level, nothing short of monumental. Epic scale, incredible effects, enthralling worlds and sets. The performances are top notch from the entire cast, but the surprise standout for me was Austin Butler as Feyd Rautha, who embodied the character into his very walk. The way he prowled was flawless and displayed everything about the character before he even uttered a word.
From a storytelling perspective, the movie is unbelievably enthralling. Nothing could peel my eyes from the screen. The pacing, writing, spectacle, emotions, it was all there and sucked the audience into this unbelievable world and kept us glued there until the credits rolled.
On a thematic level, Dune Part 2 is profound in its depiction of charismatic messiah figures. (Could possibly get into spoilers here depending on what you consider a spoiler) We see the way that Paul Atreides infiltrates the heart of the Fremen, befriending them and insisting on humility and equality among them. Then once they are enamored by him, he continues to manipulate the population. His simultaneous ascent and descent is magnificently portrayed with a subtlety , nuance, and complexity that is rarely ever seen in blockbuster movies.
A landmark in filmmaking, an instant classic, and a film that will be celebrated for generations. A true moment in cinema.
Next years Oscar’s are gonna be so fucking boring when this sweeps every single category.
