Dune: Part Two

2024

★★★★★

God gave us the cinema to experience the ecstasy of spectacles like Dune. Simply one of the most engrossing and impressively scaled films I have ever seen. The added size to the image afforded by the IMAX screen does not go to waste in Villeneuve and Greig Fraser’s hands. We were in line behind a guy who was already on his fourth viewing, and was planning to go to the Lincoln Center AMC IMAX just for Dune. That’s healthy fervor for a film that actually is that good.

Refreshed on Part I, the payoffs for Paul, Chani and Jessica are even more clear. Have seen people dissing Zendaya’s performance which I do not understand at all. She irably bears the film’s true heart and is the only character to remain defiant to the temptation of overwhelming power. Interesting how from the very start desperation hardens Lady Jessica, causing her to push Paul towards his terrible future. Not a single bad performance amongst the cast.

Thanks to patient, well-coordinated and frankly stellar production design, Dune Part II looks even better than its predecessor. Everything has a real weight to it, whether sand worms, Harkonnen soldiers or the menacing ornithopters. The surround sound and butt-kicker speakers in the Jordan’s theater further helps sell the illusion. Paul riding the sandworm or anytime anyone uses an anti-gravity devices are some of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. My eyes are glued to the screen the whole movie.
