Director Lynne Littman discusses her 1983 drama TESTAMENT with the Los Angeles Times.

“Testament” has no special effects, no mushroom clouds — just the gradual erosion of civilization as Carol watches her loved ones die. Littman didn’t obsess about research. Working with actors for the first time, she cared about depicting this grieving ordinary family.

“I wanted [the audience] to realize how precious life is,” she says. “I mean, these lovable kids, this terrific mother, this sweet place — I wanted a close-up rather than the long shot.”

The film, starring Jane Alexander as a mother attempting to hold her family together in the aftermath of a devastating nuclear attach, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

The first of only four Hanna-Barbera films, 1973’s animated classic CHARLOTTE’S WEB remains beloved by generations of families for its timeless story, dynamic voice talent (including Debbie Reynolds, Paul Lynde, and Henry Gibson), and a veritable smorgasbord of charming Sherman Brothers songs. 

On this day in 1973, Clint Eastwood presented the Academy Award for Best Picture to Francis Ford Coppola’s THE GODFATHER. 

The Oscar (the film’s third win out of ten nominations), was accepted by producer Albert S. Ruddy as the final award of the night at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, CA.  

Holding up the Oscar proudly, Ruddy ended his speech celebrating the power of movies to make dreams come true:

“The American dream and what we all want, for me at least, is represented by this. It's there for everybody if we want to work, dream and try to get it.”

UPROXX's Mike Ryan sat down with Dragonslayer director Matthew Robbins to get the scoop on the brand-new restoration of this Oscar-nominated cult classic, now on 4K UHD & Blu-ray for the very first time.

Mike Ryan: I never saw this in theaters so this is the first time I’ve gotten to watch it the way it’s supposed to look, and it is just a gorgeous thing.

Matthew Robbins: I mean, it’s shocking, heartening and depressing to hear you say that because I always felt … I would avoid seeing the film if it was a festival, or a workshop, or something like that because I couldn’t take it, honestly. It’s a beautiful-looking movie with very revolutionary effects for which they got a nomination, best special effects.

So you said you have been avoiding watching it for a long time, so were you nervous at all digging into this again? How it might hold up?

A little bit, but I was also intrigued by the fact that the technical world has galloped so far. I was hoping that they could remedy, and in fact they could. When I first went down [to Paramount], they showed me five little sequences that they already addressed for my approval. These are very, very sophisticated men and women doing this work. They could see the matte lines that were there. They could see the grainy skies and all the things that the movie had inherited when it was transferred to a commercial VHS.
