Absolute riot of a movie! Bring back comedies to Cannes!
Incredibly adept work at balancing the supremely silly with honest and vulnerable humanity in relationships. I suppose thatโs always the task with romcoms, but this one has an air of gravitas and cinematic photography to it that makes it work for Cannes. It also has an extended live action fight scene that is literally the Peter Griffin vs Chicken fight brought into reality. The full on pro wrestling pile driversโฆ
literally the funniest movie iโve seen in years. i got to see the premiere with the cast and crew and the theater was erupting with laughter the entire time, it was so refreshing. the writing was so clever and the actorsโ timing was amazing. thereโs a fight scene in here where everyone applauded after it was done because of how funny it was. i really hope this releases soon for a rewatch
Hard to collect my thoughts even after sleeping a night on it - Alpha floored me. Ducournau tackles loss and letting go with such gut-wrenching intimacy. Somehow she finds tenderness in the most disturbing body horror moments and I absolutely love her movies for that. And no, the film doesnโt spoon-feed you its meaning - it trusts you and your intuition to fill in gaps. Weirdly spiritual despite its darkness, so tense, symbolic and multi-layered. The way it finds beauty in our broken bodies, in the ties to your loved ones in spite of addiction, decay, illness will stay with me long after
Grief, you son of a bitch. This was a journey through my body and soul, since it's still very new it's hard to find the right words to articulate properly but I went to hell and came back from it. Purifying experience. You know when there's a moment of what you watch feels like it's happening to you. I felt that watching Alpha.
Perhaps the only meaning to life is to just stop walking for a moment and start dancing without knowing why and itโs ok if that makes you feel disturbed and comforted and sad and happy and lost and found and empty and full all at the same time

I knew as I took my front row seat at Music Box, that I was in for a treat. Listening to the presenter intro the film, I knew I was about to witness something special. What I didnโt know is that I would walk away with my pick for film of the year (so far, of course).
The Life of Chuck came to me in exactly the right moment, exactly when I was supposed to see it. Whatโs more, isโฆ

Beautiful, moving, heartbreaking, existential; just a few words that describe Flanaganโs remarkable THE LIFE OF CHUCK. A stellar cast with each star giving nearly their career-best performance, led by Tom Hiddlestonโs transformative work. A profound exploration of lifeโs meaning
