Re: last night’s screening. Some of you are sickos for saying such violent things about people you don’t know just because you didn’t like their fucking movie. At the absolute worst, you’re out $20 and an evening by seeing a film you don’t enjoy. The movie will never bother you again. Give it a 0.5, say it sucked, but if you can’t express yourself civilly, you shouldn’t be around others, either online or irl. Posting death threats to strangers over a piece of art is the definition of spiritually evil.

As a casual MCU watcher who considers most of the movies to be enjoyable fluff, I mocked the way that the marketing campaign for Thunderbolts* highlighted how much A24 talent worked on the film. It looked like a potential knockoff of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, no one’s favorite comic book flick. I gotta say, though, the results are fully there. Beef director Jake Schrier’s film brings cinema to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The most grounded and artistic MCU film, it is also the best. Thunderbolts* is gorgeously shot by Andrew Droz Palermo and led by an Oscar-worthy performance from Florence Pugh. More importantly, I had a damn blast watching it.

It seems this Sirk noir is considered mid, but I got very into it. I think there are some beautiful shots and the twisty narrative is carried well by strong performances. Definitely worth a look, probably more so for noir fans than for fans of Sirk's melodramas. (I'm both.)

Bullet Train meets The Raid on a plane. Josh Hartnett is perfectly cast. The humor and brutally bloody action are top-notch, even if the pacing dips at times and some story beats are predictable. Fun!

"Visions are worth fighting for. Why spend your life making someone else's dreams?"

A film that makes me wish could go outside right now with a camera and some friends to shoot something. The pure adoration Burton has for Wood is touching beyond description. Depp and Landau's performances are miracles.

I knew my mom was gonna love this. She laughed and laughed. A perfect Mother's Day treat.

Gummo exists in my soul, and vice versa. I must have seen it ten times in my life, mostly back in my teen years. It feels wrong to keep it out of my top ten any longer. Some days, I would definitely tell you it's my favorite movie, even. It inspires me so profoundly. I'm sorry, Daisies. I don't love you any less.

Unfairly known mostly for its explicit, unsimulated sex scenes, Ang Lee's Lust, Caution should be appreciated instead as a damned good slow-burn spy drama. It's a devastating film, but a brilliant one that easily ranks among Lee's top works.

I thought it would be smuttier. I also definitely didn't think it would feature Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There's an excellent film tucked away in here, but the pacing drags. I'll try the Blue version sometime.

Super fun to see on 16mm at the Roxy, and I got to meet Elsie Fisher afterwards. She is cool and nice, and so is this movie.

I never liked Coogler's Marvel films, but I am completely and thoroughly down for any film that offers not one but two spectacular action climaxes. Immediately one of the great vampire movies, and a triumph of contemporary studio filmmaking.

P.S. Do not leave at the start of the end credits. My friend and I didn't know this, so we fucked up.

They screen this in the back room of the sex clubs in Hell. (And sometimes at IFC Center.)

An remarkably compelling tragedy with only two characters for most of its runtime. Potrykus' best yet, which is high praise.

The peak and culmination of George Lucas' grand vision. I hadn't seen this film in nearly 20 years, not since soon after the DVD release. What a majestic epic, truly. The political themes, which feel as prophetic in their own way as Kelly's Southland Tales, only serve to elevate it further. Anything Star Wars released after Revenge of the Sith is fanfic that I can easily live without. As much as I'd love to have seen a sequel trilogy from Lucas, Sith being (in all likelihood) his final directorial work is appropriate, not only because it completes his saga, but because what could he possibly do to top it?
