Re: last night’s screening. Some of you are sickos for saying such violent things about people you don’t know just because you didn’t like their fucking movie. At the absolute worst, you’re out $20 and an evening by seeing a film you don’t enjoy. The movie will never bother you again. Give it a 0.5, say it sucked, but if you can’t express yourself civilly, you shouldn’t be around others, either online or irl. Posting death threats to strangers over a piece of art is the definition of spiritually evil.
The reason I have fallen so madly in love with Chantal Akerman's work is the unparalleled understanding and empathy with which she handles mental illness, loneliness and malaise. There is no greater auteur of sorrow and isolation. When we meet Julie, her character in Je, tu, il, elle, she is quietly experiencing a psychotic break alone in her apartment after a breakup. She paints her walls, rewrites the same letter repeatedly, and reduces herself to eating powdered sugar for sustenance.…
