I think they're trying to cramp too much Hellboy-lore into one movie and everything therefore feels rushed and shallow with some uneasy CGI (half-naked Ian McShane should've been the main monster and it would've been scary for real). I hate to say it but I think this would've been better as a lower budget tv-series with a "monster of the week"-kind of deal for more intimate and slow paced storytelling. Actually gets me hyped for the reboot though!

Harbour is a great choice for Hellboy but the design and the prosthetics sadly damages the performance.
