The original animated Lilo & Stitch is in a Disney blind spot for me so I don't have any thoughts on how this compares to that, but I was legitimately charmed by this.

The film opens with a sequence in space featuring a cast of completely alien characters generated in a level of CGI that is clearly intended to be considered "live action" but doesn't feel anywhere close to believable. The writing of this sequence was juvenile and I immediately started to think, "Ooof, this is going to be a rough watch" but soon after Stitch's journey to Earth begins we are introduced to the human cast of the film and the tide IMMEDIATELY turns.

Sydney Agudong and Maia Kealoha are both exceptional as Nani and Lilo respectively bringing heart, charm, and humor that helps ground the film amid the sci-fi antics of their soon-to-be pet, Stitch.

This is clearly a film made for children and as such there were a ton of jokes and slapstick gags that just weren't "for me" but the film as a whole is lovingly made and genuinely moving. It is certainly in the upper tier of Disney's live action remakes and has a great shot of being a massive hit a result this summer.

Epitome of a plane movie....extremely hammy dialogue and acting but the story is compelling enough to keep you watching in-between flight announcements and ordering your ginger ale.

This ending though??? RUDE AS HELL.

I kind of thought the whole thing was building up to a mea culpa that somehow still helped him avoid jail time but....NOPE. Instead, Eastwood "make it up for yourself." Yes, sir.

What originally struck me in the trailers as feeling like more of the same old, same old actually ended up being the MCU's best effort in several years! This collection of mostly unremarkable ing characters somehow all really gel into something special together and tell a story that is...dare I say...poignant??

And even though this is marketed as a major ensemble film, Florence Pugh's Yelena is the clear star and she proves yet again why she's become one of the most dominant actresses of the decade. I would happily watch hours of her and David Harbour together doing their crazy-ass Russian accents.

Some of the proceedings here still feel a little half-baked but enough of the mold has been broken to make this a perfectly entertaining summer romp. And though I try to avoid praising or overhyping post-credit scenes (especially in a movie that is otherwise quite contained from pimping 10 other projects) this movie ends with one that seems like it will ACTUALLY be delivered upon unlike almost every other MCU flick since Endgame. Is their mojo fully back? Only time will tell. But this is a step in the right direction.

20th anniversary re-release tonight with a surprisingly PACKED house of film lovers including some young ones behind us who dared to mention how excited they were to see this on the big screen "because they were BORN IN 2009 AND MISSED IT THE FIRST TIME."

Kill me.

20 years later the dialogue and acting are still pretty atrocious but this thing MOVES and delivers everything the prequels were designed to give us including an all-timer lightsaber battle over a field of lava.

A new development 20 years later though is that the audience now laughs and cheers when Anakin kills the kids?? I hate it here.

Lots of online discourse about whether this Iraq war tale is propaganda or not and I'm finding myself landing on the decidedly NOT side of the argument. In fact, I found it shockingly devoid of attempting to glamorize the soldiers or their mission at all. The first act is devoted to slavishly documenting the mundane and technical work of the troops until they fall under attack and that business-like work becomes mixed with the chaos of battle and the struggle to just survive.

By playing out in a tight 90 minutes of real time and depicting a battle that ultimately has no clear victor or impact on the war as a whole the film completely skirts anything remotely close to a political point of view and keeps the focus exclusively on these men and the workings of a professional solider.

The film is impeccably made on a technical level and the handsome young ensemble cast gets us through the harrowing 90 minutes with an impressive group performance.

Hands down Mom of the Year but I NEED TO KNOW that she also stayed in Italy rather than go back to her trash ass husband. Bonus points if she gets to have a fling with her daughter's handsome new father-in-law.

I quite enjoyed this even though I was constantly in fear of it going wildly off the tracks due to its potentially tricky subject matter. Didn't necessarily think a film from the early 60s would handle this kind of story with this much grace but consider me impressed. It's delicate stuff and I think this was remarkably well done.

Despite becoming an internet punching bag, this latest Disney live action remake is actually quite successful on a lot of fronts! Rachel Zegler is a star and boldly leads the film as Snow White re-imagined as a brave non-violent anti-fascist and we simply have no choice but to stan.

The original songs and updates to a few classics are (mostly) catchy and beautifully performed while the production design and cinematography pop with the kind of vibrant colors you want to see in a fairy tale like this.

The screenplay occasionally stumbles into purely wooden territory and Gal Gadot leaves a little something to be desired as the evil Queen. One wonders what a true camp diva could have done with the role and perhaps pushed the movie as a whole across the line toward greatness.

The dwarfs are of course goofy as hell but less disturbing than maybe initially feared and at the end of the day kids are going to love them.

Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella remains the undefeated champ of these remakes but this one could have been far, far worse.

I knew going in that this was a "Chapter 1" of an intended multi-part saga, but I really don't think I fully grasped how little relation this would have to an actual stand-alone film.

This is TELEVISION. Dozens of characters (many who never meet) across multiple locations and not a single one of them seems to have a complete arc of any kind in this so-called "Chapter 1". The thing just barrels along like a soap opera and then inexplicably ends with no buildup or climax by cutting to what we are led to believe is a montage of footage from the next chapter even though it is never identified as such.

In all fairness, there are a few intriguing storylines, some gorgeous visuals of the American west, and decent performances. I just wish it was something more closely resembling a movie.

But I'm always down for a Thelma Ritter t. Just wish she didn't disappear halfway through the middle of this one. But I guess when you still have Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift, and Eli Wallach sharing the screen you get over it.

There's a lot of interesting things going on in here, I'm just not entirely sure they all come together cohesively. But like I said you can always certainly do worse than watch this cast play under John Huston's direction.

Deeply inferior to Billy Wilder's other examination of sex and infidelity in NYC - The Apartment - this Marilyn Monroe romcom is unfortunately too often bogged down in just watching a borderline obnoxious man talk to himself about cheating on his wife.

There are some genuine laughs scattered throughout and the proceedings pick up anytime Marilyn is on screen but it's clear that this is a story better told on the stage than the silver screen.

Just two broads singing songs, boozin', and trying to lock down some rich as hell men....or just an entire Olympic team. I WANT TO HANG OUT WITH THEM SO BAD.

This movie is the definition of fluff but oh what fluff it is! Eye-popping technicolor, hilarious one-liners, and deliciously crafted musical numbers: this is cinematic candy at its finest.

This clear attempt to make a Hitchcockian thriller has some stunning Technicolor photography of Niagara Falls but the narrative is a little bit of a mess. The story lacks a clear main protagonist or antagonist which could maybe be interesting with a sharper screenplay but as is just kind of stumbles along hoping we care about someone....anyone. SPOILER: I didn't.

I did scream though when Polly almost feel over the wooden railing of that walking bride.

Holy shit. Watching this with no idea of what the story is was WILD. Like genuinely crazy wild and seemingly way ahead of its time.

Never seen Marilyn Monroe in a role quite this unhinged but she really nails it.

Highly recommend for 75 minutes of unexpected tension. I promise you won't guess where this thing goes.

Not sure my brain will ever fully process Sebastian Stan convincingly going from sex-on-a-stick Winter Solder to Donald fucking Trump but here we are. His every head, mouth, hand, and body movement completely embodied our worst president ever and I'm pretty bowled over by it. That Oscar nomination is very well earned.

Same goes for Jeremy Strong who pulls out all of the stops for his depiction of Roy Cohn.

I just wish the rest of the film around them mustered the same level of ion and interest. Sure, I guess it's interesting to see how Trump became the monster that he is but it feels perhaps only an inch deep and plays like every other biopic you've ever seen. I was hoping for something maybe a little punchier, a little funnier, and a little more risque but it just feels slightly like it's holding back. Roy Cohn would not approve.

Originally saw the trailer for this and thought, "A Robbie Williams biopics with a monkey starring as him?? WTF ARE WE DOING??"

Turns out: it's brilliant.

Had this been produced in a traditional sense with an actor hired to play Williams, it may still have been well acted and dynamically directed but would have generally felt like every other musician biopic you've ever seen hitting all of the same story beats you've been forced to watch 100 other times.

Those story beats are very much still present here but are somehow forgiven in the face of this cheeky ape who takes the movie just enough into surreal territory to make everything feel fresh and full of energy. The musical sequences are a wonder to behold with the "Rock DJ" number in particular being one of the most electric scenes of the whole year.

Where do I sign a petition that forces Michael Gracey to direct all future movie musicals?

This is seriously one of the best films of the year and I'm just as surprised as you are to be saying that.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson saying "Swiss??" with such disdain made me laugh inappropriately hard.

Outside of that this easily became my favorite Robert Eggers film yet. Quite possibly the most visually stunning film of the year, there were shots that just made me gasp as I tried to soak it in before it inevitably moved onto another stunning shot.

There were moments were I wished the energy of its pacing was amped up ever so slightly to match the propulsive visuals but I otherwise found this quite masterful.

If you've followed me here on Letterboxd for awhile now you may have already noticed that I am a complete sucker for movies about journalists kicking ass at their job and I'm happy to report that September 5 is the latest knockout of the genre.

This intensely taut 90-minute banger is an expert depiction of professionals doing their best during a major turning point for live news coverage. I especially loved how everyone on the team gets their moment to shine without the film getting bogged down in a bunch of extraneous side plots or tangents. The focus is always on them doing their jobs as efficiently as possible and the film never betrays them by doing the same itself.

Definitely one of 2024's best.

First screening of 2025 in lovely 70mm was a lovely way to start the year!

I loooooved the first half of this (and god bless that intermission) but left the second half far more conflicted about what I had just watched. There were just a few too many plot points/character traits that didn't seem to go anywhere seemingly meaningful or were resolved off-screen in somewhat inexplicable ways. Perhaps some of these would feel different upon deeper reflection or another viewing but in this initial post-viewing period they definitely hold it back from full greatness.

That being said, this entire production is a stunner. The directing, the acting, the score, the sound, and cinematography are all beautifully done and this is hands-down the most well-paced 3.5 hour movie I've ever seen (again shout out to that sweet, sweet intermission).

I try my best to not get distracted by awards season shenanigans when watching the flood of end-of-year movies but it's CRAZY to consider Zoe Saldana a ing actress in this, right?? She's clearly the lead as the character who leads us through this story...

But I digress.

I hadn't had a chance to watch this since it debuted a couple months ago but have endured countless friends telling me how "insane" it was in the meantime and I gotta be honest...I didn't find it all that insane. Sure, it's an unorthodox musical about a lawyer helping a notorious drug kingpin undergo transition and navigate the aftermath in the years that follow, but it's an overall pretty accessible piece of cinema if you can get onboard with the musical aspects.

I generally really enjoyed going on this journey. Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon are both terrific in their roles and Jacques Audiard's direction is never dull. I'm curious how well it holds up to additional viewings or how it will stand the test of time, but on first glance this felt refreshingly original and genuinely unique addition to the musical genre.

Truth be told: I've come to almost dread making these lists knowing that one of the movies I've yet to see might sneak in and unseat something but alas...this is as good a time as any to pull the band-aid off.

These 10 represent my favorite films of year for a variety of reasons: they made me laugh, cry, think, or just in general feel something more than the many, many other titles I saw this year. I wouldn't go so far to say that they are the definitive "best". Nor did I get too hung up on the actual ranking. They're just the ones I would save for posterity if all other movies released this year were threatened in a fire.

This continues my lists about series so the rules stay the same - this isn't just sequels - the films have to be of a series of 3 or more films. Reboots are considered the first of a new series.

  1. The Godfather Part II
  2. The Dark Knight
  3. The Empire Strikes Back
  4. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  5. Aliens
  6. Superman II
  7. X2
  8. From Russia with Love
  9. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
  10. Batman Returns

This is a tough one, folks. But I'm trying to rank the best 1st films of series. To be counted as a series I stipulated that it has to have released at least 3 films.
Reboots should be considered the start of a new series though you'll notice none are included here. ;-)

  1. The Godfather
  2. Star Wars
  3. Halloween
  4. Alien
  5. Superman
  6. Raiders of the Lost Ark
  7. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
  8. Dr. No
  9. Jurassic Park
  10. Scream

These are the films I would take to a desert island with me and be able to watch repeatedly without getting tired.
