I was really excited to watch Dune: Part Two after really loving the first Dune movie, and it's safe to say that the second part of Paul Atreides story didn't let me down whatsoever and easily met my expectations. If anything, this movie somehow sured the first Dune movie which I already thought was an amazing film. Dune: Part Two pretty much takes everything I loved about the first Dune and expands on it and makes it even larger in scale. Because the first Dune does such a great job at explaining who these characters are, and what this world is, Dune: Part Two is a far easier movie to comprehend. I already felt comfortable with the lore of Dune about half way through the original film, but with this film I was extremely comfortable with the lore and I felt at ease with everything that was going on.
The story in this movie is probably my favorite part of Dune: Part Two. It reminded me alot of my favorite Star Wars film, Revenge of the Sith. I'm sure I'm not the only one to say this, but there are lots of parallels between Paul Atreides and Anakin Skywalker in of their arcs. But, this movie goes out of its ways to make different decisions. Frankly, despite RotS being a top five movie of all-time for me, Dune: Part Two actually does a far better job at showing Paul Atreides descent into madness. Paul's turn felt more thought-out, and felt like something thrust upon him instead of a choice. His turn was actually so well done that I was still on his side by the end, because I felt like his character was justified in doing what he did, and that he had no choice. That's how good both the acting and writing in this film are.
Timothee Chalamet was really great in this film, especially in that third act where he became more full of himself and aggressive. I thought everyone did a great job in this movie, but I was really impressed with Timothee. Also I finally get the hype with Austin Butler's performance in this movie. I don't think Feyd-Rautha is a Joker level villian, but I did think he was great. Although, I felt very uncomfortable with how bald his head was. Lastly, the film is masterfully directed. Denis Villeneuve is an amazing director, and this film is absolutely gorgeous. It's somehow even more beautiful than the first Dune film. I'm really glad I got to experience both of these modern day masterpieces. Both Dune and Dune: Part Two are some of the greatest sci-fi films of all-time, and I'm really glad they exist. Dune: Part Two is easily my favorite movie to have been released in 2024, at least up to this point in the year, and I think it's going to be a hard one to top.
