Betelgeuse was in surprisingly little of the movie and he was kinda the worst part but all in all it was super duper uper fun

Its an homage to Five Nights at Freddys pretty specifically… but i think it has something to say about FNAF as a cultural phenomenon beyond being an adaptation 

First off if you’re worried about the fact that Nicholas Cage plays a silent character and therefore the movie will be insufficiently Nouveau Shamanic. Worry not! Where other actors would consider a silent character to be an “easy A”, Nicky Cage treats it as a challenge, and treats himself like another one of the animatronics.

FNAF, if you might have noticed, has a lot of lore. While I am completely disinterested in the series (I’d rather drill into my sternum than watch a MatPat video), I am fascinated by the fact that the series became the subject of analysis by children with no media literacy. All of the theories that I have unwillingly heard are all trying to literally explain the plot, without any gesture to interpretation or meaning or metaphor or anything of that nature. Willy’s Wonderland, in a very videogamy manner, explains the lore to Nicolas Cage about how the murder animatronics came to be and how the town came to entrap people (the line “Katra energy transfer ritual” has Nick Cage written all over it). Anyway Nick Cage’s character is a complete and total mystery and i think that is wonderful.

Willy’s Wonderland adapts a videogame flavor by focusing on the “gameplay loops” that Nick Cage engages in. After he gets locked in, he follows this pattern: Clean, fight an animatronic, get a clean shirt, bag the broken animatronic, repeat, if his watch beeps, he drops everything and immediately takes a break to drink soda and play pinball, even if there are animatronics up and about. In this way he acts more like a machine than the animatronics, like a force of nature restoring a machine order back to Willy’s wonderland. Is autistic, diabetic, no clue it doesn’t matter. Hes an action hero in a horror film. And there’s still some classic horror tropes… it does feel a little perfunctory, but maybe its to drive the horror of the fact that Nick Cage is not interested in saving people, he only cares about cleaning and pinball… which… mood

Anyway 9/10 would dance to pinball again

Butterfly kisses is so fucking about film making in a most delightful way

Its all mirrors and eyes and cameras and the naval gazing of film making. Theres so many documentarians in this film… Its a cautionary tale about the horrors that arise when documentarians make documentaries about other documentarians. Spoiler alert even the fucking monster is arguably a documentarian himself.

Btw the monster is like perfectly built to feed exclusively on documentarians and nothing else. Like a tropical bird that can only drink the nectar of one species of flower that grows on the north side of a single river bank. If you’re not a documentarian then you’re in zero danger.

Its a great homage to both found footage films and discovery channel ghost adventure to find river monster with big feet. And if you’re down to engage with filmmaking omphaloskepisis then its a great time
