The Rule of Jenny Pen

This hit extra hard since I just spent a couple days at my uncle’s hospice center. This film really excelled at depicting the absolute terror of losing your physical and mental capacity while being confined with a murderous psychopath. The last 20 minutes was incredible. The world needs more New Zealand horror.

This was an incredible drama, but a horrible horror movie. Fantastic character development in the first half of the film. But then so many mistakes were made to decrease the scare factor of the vampires. For example, having all of the club guests leave before shit really popped off. But the practical effects, acting, and setting were great.

This movie gave exactly what I thought it would give. Campy over-the-top performances, hilarious action sequences with terrible practical effects, and one badass ex-pastor turned vicious, vengeful reptile. The world needs more action comedy movies like this one.

This film is certainly not for everyone, but if you appreciate Lynchian atmospheric horror that sends a chill down your spine then this one is for you. I’m very impressed by what they were able to accomplish for such a low budget and the acting is certainly not B-movie quality. The most common critique I hear is that people can’t figure out the “meaning behind it.” But, I’m a firm believer that not every film needs to have a deeper message, especially horror. Audiences should just sit back, relax, and enjoy the incredibly creepy vibes.
