Emmy's Staff Pick:

It's hard to believe that this film is 20 years old, it’s a really cool film and has become a classic. It’s also very much of its time. I love to see the fashion, language & choice of karaoke songs of the people living in Tokyo in the 2000s.

It has an amazing soundtrack. Like many people in Japan I discovered My Bloody Valentine through this film and their music, as it does in this film, has given colour to my life. I feel a connection between Japan and Dublin through this film’s soundtrack which was comforting when I experienced community relations barriers and culture shock in Dublin.

With the 78th Festival de Cannes just over halfway through, Head of Cinemas Alice Black and Programmer David Kelly have taken some time out between screenings and cups of coffee to share some highlights of the festival so far.

Alice Black - Head of Cinema

PILLION - Who would have thought a film about BDSM could be warm and funny but Harry Leighton's directorial debut is exactly that, and then some. Harry Melling is superb as the shy and retiring Colin, whose life is transformed when he meets the dominant biker Ray, (the "impossibly handsome" Alexander Skarsgård). Ultimately, full frontal nudity and all, this is a sweet film about identity, acceptance, and love. A new Christmas classic on the cards?

URCHIN - Harris Dickinson's directorial debut proves that his talents aren't just in front of the camera. Turns out he's also a gifted storyteller with creativity to burn with this story of addiction, homelessness and the struggle of recovery. Frank Dillane, on screen in almost every shot, is terrific and the ending; heartbreaking.

MY FATHER'S SHADOW - Already being described as this year's Aftersun, Akinola Davies Jr.'s directorial debut (written with his brother Wade) unfolds as a memory of two young boys, spending a treasured and rare moment with their largely absent father in 1990s Nigeria. Largely taking place over one day, it has such a beautifully observed sense of place and emotions. Quietly powerful, there was not a dry eye in the house at the end of our screening.

SOUND OF FALLING - Mascha Schilinski channels historical trauma through the experiences of four generations of women in one German family, moving seamlessly back and forth in time until it seems to dissolve. Haunting and astonishingly beautiful to look at and listen to, it is truly original and an absolute marvel.

David Kelly - Film Programmer

First up, Ari Aster takes us back to the early days of the Covid pandemic in EDDINGTON. Joaquin Phoenix plays a sheriff who decides he has no choice but to take on Pedro Pascal’s left leaning mayor in an election in a small town in the US. The pair have a complicated history, which leads to some excruciating twists (one scene with Katy Perry’s Fireworks will be a hit online, I imagine) and truly brutal turns. It’s a microscopic look at the tensions that have jet fuelled the divisions in the US and, much like Beau Is Afraid, has divided critics and audiences here in Cannes. I found it to be his funniest film yet, without a dull moment, that even goes full 80s action in one scene. Just one of the many surprises that had me gripped from start to finish.

Kleber Mendonça Filho’s THE SECRET AGENT (O Agente Secreto) takes us back to Brazil in the 70s where Wagner Moura plays a father who returns to his hometown to reunite with his son. He intends to flee the country which is being ruled by a military dictatorship but must deal with corrupt officials and hitmen along the way. With a runtime of 160 minutes it takes a bit more patience than his previous release (the bold and brilliant) Bacurau, but it allows its characters to flourish and brings you in to the community at its core. It takes some surreal twists (Severed leg, I’ll say no more) as it heads towards a tense and emotional conclusion. It’s another historical political thriller, that is without a doubt on a par with I’m Still Here, and just gets better the more I think about it. Brazilian cinema is on a stellar run. Long may it continue.

Julia Ducournau’s ALPHA is an apocalyptic tale that deals with addiction and loss set in an 80s /90s that is in the grip of an epidemic. This one is still sitting with me, but the audience reactions have ranged from baffled and exhilarated. The performances are incredible and there are scenes that reminded me of Hellraiser: Hellbound and Cruising. The body horror is shocking and even beautiful at times. You’ll know what I mean when you see it. I was taken instantly by Raw and Titane and they both ranked amongst my favourites in their release years, but I’m eager to see this one again as its hard to compare to her previous work after just one watch.

NOUVELLE VAGUE is the second new feature from Richard Linklater that I have seen this year. The first was the thoroughly enjoyable Blue Moon that was shot in Dublin and features some truly wonderful performances from Ethan Hawke and Andrew Scott. This one takes us back to spend time with the giants of the French New Wave movement and in particular Jean Luc Godard as he prepares to make his debut feature Breathless. Once again, the performances are perfect. It’s shot in the style of Breathless, adding to its playfulness. A real love letter to the era with everyone from Jean-Paul Belmondo to Agnes Varda and Francois Truffaut to Eric Rohmer to name a few (seriously, EVERYONE from that place and time is portrayed this). I love a ‘making of’ feature/documentary so this was right up my street.

Some other highlights so far include Harris Dickinson’s Mike Leigh-esque URCHIN, Akinola Davies’ poetic and masterful MY FATHER’S SHADOW and a late night screening of Sean Byrne’s DANGEROUS ANIMALS which was just a lot of fun to watch with a festival crowd.

More to come including THE HISTORY OF SOUND with Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. I’m still processing Lynne Ramsay’s DIE, MY LOVE so I’ll say more about that in the roundup. Looking forward to letting you all know how it goes.

You can catch your own slice of la Croisette this weekend at Light House with two recent Cannes premiered films, Christopher McQuarrie's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING (now showing) and Wes Anderson's THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME hitting the big screen this Friday.

The story of a family and a family business.

A spy picture in the style of Anderson is a promising prospect, especially with a cast including some of his regular troupe (Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Brian Cranston, and Jeffrey Wright) as well as some new players (Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Charlotte Gainsbourg) with the wonderful Benicio Del Toro taking centre stage in his second Anderson film.

This film, an independent film in the truest sense, made by a small team on a free software, has come a very long way. This dialogue-free animation has had an excellent opening weekend following a very successful awards campaign which culminated in an Academy Award.
Wunderkind director Gints Zilbalodis has taken the animation world by storm with his beautifully crafted sophomore feature Flow, which has received a multitude of awards and nominations to date, including two nominations for both BAFTA and the Academy Awards.
The mystical world he creates in Flow is in peril. There are traces of human inhabitants, but they are now nowhere to be seen as water begins to flood the landscape. The story begins following a small, solitary cat as the shoreline rises and the home where it once lived is submerged underwater. Forced to flee, he happens upon a refuge boat containing a calm and unperturbed capybara who seems amenable to his presence, and the two begin a journey on the water towards higher ground. Along the way they cross paths with a lemur, obsessed with collecting shiny objects, a boisterous and excitable dog and a stoic, mysterious secretary bird. Together, as they traverse the landscape on their fable-like quest, the ragtag team of animals must learn to trust each other and work together to survive.
We are delighted to daring, innovative filmmaking and look forward to seeing what Gints and his team have in store next.

David Lynch - a filmmaker, a painter, a musician, an artist in the truest sense of the word. The visionary work of David Lynch has inspired so many, far beyond the reaches of cinema and television.
The very existence of the term 'Lynchian' is proof that he was able to capture the elusive, subconscious sense that there was something dark, strange and unspoken lurking beneath the mundanity of our lives in a way that nobody had before. Although the darkness is usually front and centre, his films are often humorous and ultimately hopeful.

Lynch was a great believer in the joys of creativity. And so, we will be celebrating the life of this great, singular creative with a retrospective in Light House.

For one week only, exclusively at Light House, the latest caper from Aardman, WALLACE & GROMIT: VENGEANCE MOST FOWL will take to the big screen.
Aardman's four-time Academy Award®-winning director Nick Park and Emmy Award-nominated Merlin Crossingham return with a brand new epic adventure, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. In this next installment, Gromit’s concern that Wallace is becoming too dependent on his inventions proves justified, when Wallace invents a “smart” gnome that seems to develop a mind of its own. When it emerges that a vengeful figure from the past might be masterminding things, it falls to Gromit to battle sinister forces and save his master… or Wallace may never be able to invent again!

UNDER THE MINK q5h6f FILM NOIR AT COLUMBIA PICTURES https://letterboxd.jeux1001.com/lighthoused7/story/under-the-mink-film-noir-at-columbia-pictures/ letterboxd-story-29272 Wed, 30 Oct 2024 06:21:54 +1300 <![CDATA[

This Noirvember we’re screening a selection of five films noir from the heyday of Columbia Pictures, with the theme of doomed romance at their centre. Celebrating the centenary of the studio in 2024, and featuring a rich shared palette of stars, from Humphrey Bogart to Rita Hayworth, the noirs made by Columbia Pictures in this postwar period have proven endlessly popular over the decades, perhaps because their existential despair and geometric visual style never feel antiquated.
That sense of doomed romance, romance with dirt under its fingernails and a cut on its face, haunts the world of film noir. Starry-eyed expectations are rarely met; rage, lust, and thwarted desire simmer beneath the surface. If noir is about the underside of urban life, and its seedy darkness seeps into the brightly-lit wholesomeness of mid-century American life in the daytime, then its gender relations are equally unlovely. With their slinky femme fatales and dime store pulp source material, Columbia noir is chock-full of curdled optimism and exquisite fatalism; men and women regard each other with suspicion. That fact of life - as of cinema - may never go out of style.
Notes and curation by film critic Christina Newland.

There are currently 2 A24 debut features screening exclusively at Light House. Linked by both their studio and a subject matter of mothers and daughters; the two are also very different and highlight the sort of filmmaking we have come to expect from projects ed by A24.

JANET PLANET tells the story of Lacey and her mother, Janet. In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother. As the months , three visitors enter their orbit, all captivated by Janet and her spellbinding nature. In her solitary moments, Lacy inhabits an inner world so extraordinarily detailed that it begins to seep into the outside world.Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker captures a child's experience of time ing, and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother, in this singularly sublime film debut.

TUESDAY stars Seinfeld alum Julia Louis-Dreyfuss as a mother who, along with her teenage daughter, must confront Death when it arrives in the form of an astonishing talking bird. Belfast actress Lola Petticrew (A Bump Along the Way, Dating Amber) stars as Louis-Dreyfuss' daughter in this comionate adult fairy tale about the acceptance of loss.

Handsome Devil with Director John Butler + special guests at Light House 1t442g https://letterboxd.jeux1001.com/lighthoused7/story/handsome-devil-with-director-john-butler/ letterboxd-story-25306 Thu, 25 Jul 2024 00:09:37 +1200 <![CDATA[

Dublin International Film Festival is hosting a special screening of John Butler’s ‘impossible to resist’ film Handsome Devil (2016) on Thursday 25th July, here Light House Cinema. The one-off event is part of a series of unique cinema experiences presented as part of the Tanqueray 0.0% Film Club and will feature an In Conversation with John Butler and other special guests.
Premiered as the Closing Night Film at DIFF 2017, of the cast and crew, including Director John Butler (The Outlaws, The Stag, Papi Chulo) will reunite to enjoy and celebrate this coming-of-age comedy. By bringing this contemporary classic back to one of Dublin’s leading independent cinemas, DIFF is doing what it does best: ing, showcasing, and promoting the best of Irish filmmaking talent.
Produced by Treasure Entertainment (Papi Chulo, The Stag, Flora And Son), and starring Fionn O’Shea (Dating Amber, Normal People) and Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You, Bottoms)alongside Andrew Scott (Ripley, All of Us Strangers, Sherlock), Handsome Devil is a story of friendship and fun told with a tenderness and honesty that makes it as relevant and poignant now as it did to audiences who enjoyed when it first hit the big screen.
The film follows the story of the unlikely friendship of boarding school roommates Ned (Fionn O’Shea) and Conor (Nicholas Galitzine), who despite taking an instant dislike to each other are encouraged by their English teacher Dan Sherry (Andrew Scott) to find their own voices and defy the status quo of their rugby-obsessed school.
Director John Butler said, “It’s a dream to see Handsome Devil continue to find a devoted global audience so long after its ‘first life’. Maybe the message is timeless - people will always need friends, and acceptance, and stories on screen will always have the power to bring souls together to look at the flickering light, in the dark”
There are also plenty of recognisable and well-loved stars in the ing cast with Moe Dunford, Hugh O’Conor, Ardal O’Hanlon and Amy Huberman making appearances, and Brian O’Driscoll choreographing the top-notch, on-field rugby action.
DIFF Festival Director Grainne Humphreys said “John Butler is one our most talented Directors, and we’re proud to have premiered The Stag, Handsome Devil and Papi Chulo at previous festivals. The timeless impact of this title and its ability to continually connect with international audiences is testament to John's storytelling and the stellar cast and the creative teams he works with.
This one-off special screening is the latest in a series of unmissable events presented as part of the Tanqueray 0.0% Film Club, which launched earlier this year at DIFF 2024 as a way to elevate the cinema experience and bring filmmakers together for magnificent conversations.
Following the screening, John Butler and of the cast will revisit their experiences of making the film and explore how their careers and projects have developed since. Irish actress, writer, and Tanqueray Brand Ambassador Amy Huberman will host the conversation and invite of the public to put their questions to the Handsome Devil team.

Fresh from storming the stage at Glastonbury and the Irish premiere of their self-titled feature film at the Galway Film Fleadh last night, KNEECAP have programmed a film series titled KNEECAP SELECTS which will play at Light House ahead of the release of their debut feature film KNEECAP on August 8th.
Having already garnered international acclaim at Sundance Film Festival in Utah and Sundance London earlier this year, Irish audiences are hotly anticipating the release.
Based on the origin story of the riotous and ground-breaking Irish-language rap trio Kneecap, the film stars the band’s Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí in their acting debuts alongside Academy Award® nominated Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs, 12 Years a Slave), Simone Kirby (Hidden Assets, Jimmy’s Hall), Jessica Reynolds (Outlander), Fionnuala Flaherty (Ros na Rún) and Josie Walker (Belfast, The Wonder). Set in west Belfast in 2019, it chronicles how fate brings the trio together and how they then go on to “change the sound of Irish music forever”.

For KNEECAP SELECTS, each member has picked either a favourite film or one in which they feel inspired their own story, and had the following to say about each.

The Greasy Strangler “A strange and weird film, pure bullshit, no one should watch it. It’ll put ye off hotdogs for life. Bain sult as!” - DJ Próvaí
Hunger“About Bobby Sands the hunger striker from West Belfast, who is a local hero in our community. Played brilliantly by Michael Fassbender. An absolute must watch.” - Mo Chara
Man About Dog: “A movie about West Belfast, in the days before taxi men had licenses, everyone was skint but always knew how to make a few quid (or lose it).” - Móglaí Bap

Before Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott made the hilarious high school comedy Bottoms, there was SHIVA BABY.

Set mostly in one house, Sennott plays Danielle, a college student, attending a shiva (Jewish funeral service) with her parents. There she runs into her sugar daddy, who she discovers is married and a father, and her ex-girlfriend, who she did not expect to see. Chaos and hilarity ensue.

Described as a "queer Uncut Gems", Seligman's debut packs a mighty punch in a very brief 77 minute runtime. Fun, funny, anxiety inducing - Shiva Baby launched Rachel Sennott's star and includes excellent performances from Molly Gordon, Diana Agron, Polly Draper and Fred Melamed.

The film screens at Light House this Sunday, June 30. Tickets are on sale now:

Celebrating Donald Sutherland 1d105c Invasion of the Body Snatchers https://letterboxd.jeux1001.com/lighthoused7/story/celebrating-donald-sutherland-invasion-of/ letterboxd-story-24238 Mon, 24 Jun 2024 23:33:53 +1200 <![CDATA[

With roughly 200 credits under his belt, both big-screen and small, Donald Sutherland, was just as likely to turn up in a straight to VHS title as he was an Oscar winner. His vast filmography reveals an actor who enjoyed and was committed to his craft no matter what the project. From original director-driven works like M*A*S*H and Klute to IP-backed action franchises like the hugely successful Hunger Games series, Sutherland was a shape shifter, at home in any genre. A proud Canadian, he never forgot his roots so what better way to celebrate Canada Day, July 1st, than with a screening of one of our favourite films from his long career.

Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers starred Donald Sutherland as San Francisco health inspector Matthew Bennell, Brooke Adams as his work colleague and unrequited love interest Elizabeth Driscoll, Leonard Nimoy as celebrity shrink and self-help guru David Kibner, Jeff Goldblum as failed poet Jack Bellicec, and Veronica Cartwright as his wife Nancy.

Opening with images of the alien seeds drifting through space before landing on Earth, spawning first flowers then pods, this 1978 version of Jack Finney’s book ramped up the body horror, paranoia levels and conspiracy-theory angle, as well as telling part of the story from the pods’ point of view. Michael Chapman’s noir-inspired cinematography – deep shadows, distorted wide and Dutch angles – is used to unsettling effect, adding to the sense of dislocation, mistrust and dread. The film’s final image, remains terrifying to this day.

Twenty-Five years on… Would you have taken the red or blue pill? Did you think those students were really lost in the woods? Were you tempted to an elitist cult or clique? 1999, a year that surely shaped modern cinema, laying the groundwork for a new era of teen superstars and visionary directors. Was it the year cinema was at its best or were people looking for escapism for fear of the Millenium Bug?
It’s time to swap whatsapp for wassssup. Get ready for a 1999 makeover as this summer Light House have dug deep into the archives and dusted off their tinted glasses to treat audiences to a feast full of seduction, satire, suspicion and supernatural including Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, the ever-relevant Election, the sun-soaked The Talented Mr. Ripley and of course the Wachowski’s revolutionary The Matrix.
Loyalty+ will not only relish in a wistful trip down memory lane on screen, but their wallets will also enjoy nostalgic ticket prices with season events at 1999 pricing (€4.99).

It’s time to party like it’s 1999, the season will kick off on Saturday 6th July with a Cruel Intentions Secret Society Party, DJ Louise Bruton will be spinning more classics than Now That’s What I Call Music! 42, David Lynch’s The Straight Story and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia will both be shown on 35mm, Fionnula Jones will discuss how 10 Things I Hate About You is a Bop for FlopCulture, Cinema Book Club will discuss Audition on July 29th, and audience can experience the iconic Maryland woods recreated for The Blair Witch Project as the season comes towards an end on August 24th. Dublin Vintage Factory will recreate looks for season events, and audiences can expect surprises along the way as well as an end of season quiz hosted by Rory Cashin.

On planning the season, Light House Cinema programmer David Kelly reflects:

The year 1999 was certainly a formative one as I spent a huge portion of it planning to go to my local cinema to absorb sights and sounds that would stay with me for the next 25 years. The 20th century went out on a cinematic high with masters like Stanley Kubrick, Pedro Almodovar, Spike Lee, David Lynch and Martin Scorsese releasing films alongside newcomers like Sofia Coppola, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lynne Ramsay and Spike Jonze.

It was a year that changed the mainstream cinematic landscape with genre defining releases such as The Blair Witch Project and The Matrix taking horror and action to terrifying and incredible new heights. 1999 gave us some of the greatest coming of age movies of all time in Cruel Intentions and But I’m a Cheerleader and razor-sharp satire such as Drop Dead Gorgeous. It’s a delight and honour to dedicate an entire season to one of cinema’s greatest years. I’ll see you at the Light House this Summer!”

We're delighted to team up with Small Trans Film Club to host a screening of Uncovered: The Diary Project, which will be followed by a Q&A with trailblazing transgender choreographer Sean Dorsey, on April 2.

The Q&A will be hosted by programmer James Hudson (GAZE LGBTQIA+ International Film Festival, Small Trans Film Club) who had this to say about the screening:

While Lou Sullivan has been a beloved figure in the trans community for decades, the 2019 publication of We Both Laughed in Pleasure: The Selected Diaries of Lou Sullivan, 1961-1991 introduced him or clarified his significance to many younger trans people and to the international trans community without access to his diaries (carefully conserved by the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco).

Sean Dorsey’s Uncovered: The Diary Project is not only a beautiful piece of theatre and a moving celebration of Lou’s life, it’s also a snapshot of a time before We Both Laughed In Pleasure became one of the most requested, talked-about and shared-around books in the Small Trans Library’s catalogue.

To write and choreograph the “Lou” suite, Sean had to read Lou’s diaries on site and hire a photographer to individually photograph each page. The amount of invisible labour that went into the creation of this work is staggering! So this mini-season on March 29th and April 2nd is not just a celebration of Lou’s life, but also a reflection on how trans artists have honoured one another over the years, and how we can (and must! and will!) carry that torch as we celebrate the Irish trans artists and activists of our time.

Being able to screen this film in the Light House is not just about watching Sean’s dance piece on the big screen; it’s a chance for people to meet, chat, spend time together united by a ion for trans art. For Sean to be ing us in-person to discuss “Lou”, his transformative art and choreographing community is just an incredible opportunity to round out this very special event.

As a Light House collaborator (and former employee—FOH class of 2020!) I know very well the tangible sense of comfort, safety and camaraderie, so I’m so thrilled to welcome people to the cinema for this unique opportunity to celebrate Lou Sullivan, Sean Dorsey, joy, sex, solidarity, healthcare, and ourselves.

Sometimes our heroes and heroines are innocent but sometimes not, and we find ourselves rooting for them all the same. Doc’n Roll Film Festival comes to Light House 3r3759 https://letterboxd.jeux1001.com/lighthoused7/story/docn-roll-film-festival-comes-to-light-house/ letterboxd-story-20157 Thu, 8 Feb 2024 05:32:51 +1300 <![CDATA[

Dublin, 26 January 2024 - Doc'n Roll Film Festival, renowned for celebrating the intersection of alternative music and indie documentary subcultures, is thrilled to announce its expansion to Dublin, debuting at Light House Cinema. This exciting venture marks a significant milestone for Doc'n Roll as it brings its unique blend of documentary films and outlier musical exploration to the vibrant cultural scene of Dublin. Established in London in 2014 by Dubliner Colm Forde, Doc’n Roll has grown to become an annual UK-wide event, with editions in Brooklyn, San Francisco and LA planned for 2024.
The programme of 4 Irish premiere feature films, spotlights a broad range of music genres and scenes, including rave, post-punk, folk and electronic music. Featured artists include Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Judee Sill, Dj Fergie and hard-house legend Tony De Vit.

Colm Forde, artistic director and co-founder of Doc’n Roll Film Fest, says:
“I am thrilled to bring Doc’n Roll home to Ireland in a year that marks our 10th anniversary.
Over the past decade, we have been ionate about championing a myriad of global music subcultures through the art of documentary, primarily by emerging filmmakers. Our festival has become a platform for diverse, outlier and independent voices, reflecting both our ethos and the profound impact of music on people's lives. Through these documentaries, we aim to shed light on the remarkable stories of artists who, like us, have pursued their ions against the odds with unwavering dedication.”
Scheduled to take place from the 15th to the 20th of February at Dublin’s Light House Cinema - plus one screening at Galway’s Pálás cinema - the festival promises an immersive experience for attendees, offering a diverse selection of documentaries that capture the essence of music and its profound impact on culture, politics and society.
The inaugural edition of Doc’n Roll Film Festival Dublin looks to inspire, entertain, enlighten and provoke discussion through a variety of post-screening Q&A sessions.
Film Programme:
15 Feb - Lighthouse Dublin - Mutiny in Heaven: The Birthday Party (Tickets)
17 Feb - Pálás Galway - Mutiny in Heaven: The Birthday Party (Tickets)
Narrated exclusively by the original Birthday Party band , Mutiny in Heaven delves deep into a band's psyche, chronicling how Nick Cave and his school friends began captivating audiences with their confrontational performances, primal screams, outlaw gothic horror and anarchic lifestyle.
17 Feb - Free Party: A Folk History + Zoom Q&A (Tickets)
All they wanted was the freedom to party. The State saw them as the enemy within.
A timely DIY indie film that follows the birth of the UK's free party rave movement from the late 80s and early 90s and the social, political and cultural impact it's had on our present times. The film explores the inception of the movement, a meeting between urban ravers and the new age travellers during Thatcher's last days in power, and the explosive years that followed. Featuring Spiral Tribe, DiY, Circus Warp, and Bedlam sound systems.
18 Feb - Don’t Ever Stop - The Story of Tony de Vit + Q&A (Tickets)
Working-class gay DJ Tony De Vit invented hard house music and made it mainstream – his fans included Madonna and Boy George when he was the star attraction at all-night London club Trade. In 1996, in his late 30s, he was on the cusp of becoming one the biggest DJs in the world. Robert Ferguson, already known as Fergie, was a 15-year-old budding DJ in a small town in Northern Ireland. This powerful documentary tells the story of how three men's lives became intertwined in a tale of love, loss, gay identity, hero worship, attitudes to AIDS and the 90s boom in dance music.

20 Feb - Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill + Zoom Q&A (Tickets)
This brilliant film is an intimate portrait of an unsung musical artist, largely told by Judee herself. It charts the vertiginous arc of Judee’s life from a deeply troubled adolescence of abuse, addiction and prison through her meteoric rise in the music world. She went from living in a car with four others sleeping in shifts to appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone in four years. Interviews with friends and contemporaries, including Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and David Geffen give a first-hand experience of Judee’s personality, talents and struggles.

Tickets are also on sale via https://www.docnrollfestival.com/films/

The Year Ahead at Light House 1k1q5z https://letterboxd.jeux1001.com/lighthoused7/story/the-year-ahead-at-light-house/ letterboxd-story-20156 Thu, 8 Feb 2024 05:24:47 +1300 <![CDATA[

It's 2024! And a new year means new films!
2023 was a very big year in cinema and saw record breaking attendances in both Light House and Pálás but it's the new year and there is a lot to be excited about in 2024! As ever, our Programming team will endeavour to bring you all the best cinema that 2024 has to offer, and with that in mind, we asked them what films they are most excited for in the coming year and here's what they had to say,

Alice Black - Head of Cinemas
When we were looking ahead last year, not many of us could have predicted the way that the high profile duo of Barbie and Oppenheimer would create a game changing moment for our industry. Creating a must-see moment, they were both the talk of the town and in Light House and Pálás, as they navigated a sea audiences jolly in pink or quietly contemplative, our staff rose to the occasion and reminded me of just how magical going to the movies can be.
So what, might you ask, will be this year's big hitters? I have been doing this job long enough to know not to try and second guess the audiences! But I have had the privilege of seeing a lot of the 2024 releases already and can say with every confidence, that it is going to be an exceptional one for film lovers. We’ve put together some or favourites - put them in your diaries:
Andrew Haigh is a British filmmaker I adore - from Weekend to 45 Years - his work is always full of careful, devastating emotion. All of Us Strangers, a four hander starring Ireland’s own Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal (ed by Jamie Bell and Claire Foy), is a time travelling tale about love and loss. Scott is astonishing and the film is a wonder. I still think about it most days.
Also unforgettable, was the period Danish Western Promised Land with the always wonderful Mads Mikkelsen's turn as a retired soldier desperately trying to make a new life as a rural settler. The stakes are high, the villains are dastardly, and he has his work cut out for him to survive. It’s gripping and a great watch.
And lastly, I’m going to give a shout out for something a film that I fell in love with at Cannes. Robot Dreams is a film which has been picking up awards everywhere it is shown, garnering rave reviews and capturing the hearts of audiences wherever it is shown. It’s a beautiful story of friendship between a dog and his robot companion (just go with it) for all ages. With a rocking soundtrack, this film will have you tapping your feet, but also thinking about the impact a period of loneliness can have on anyone and how important it is to feel connected to those around you.

David Kelly - Light House Programmer
I'm going to start at the end with the Christmas 2024 release of The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim directed by the titan of anime that is Kenji Kamiyama. Details have been very light on the ground for this one, but it's very exciting to see LOTR return to the big screen and even moreso in anime form.
There's so much to look forward to this year and very close to the top of that list would have been Robert Eggers' reimagining of the tragedy of Count Orlock, but the release date for Nosferatu is Jan 01 2025. I can't help but mention it anyway as Eggers' hasn't failed to deliver yet and this really is just a perfect fit for him and boasts an incredible cast.
On the home front, Patricia Kelly's Verdigris was a deserving winner of the Best Independent Film award at last year's Galway Film Fleadh so I'm looking forward to seeing it get a theatrical release in 2024 and the Element Pictures produced Poor Things arrives on Jan 12th and in 35mm format no less. It's a wonderous fever dream from Yorgos Lanthimos and a real contender for Best Picture at this year's Oscars.

Bong Joon ho solidified his legendary status with Parasite, so hopes are high for the Robert Pattinson starring Mickey 17 which releases in late March.
Add to these (deep breath) a Fede Alvarez directed Alien movie, George Miller's Furiosa, Rose Glass' Love Lies BleedingDrive Away DollsDune: Part IIChallengersGladiator 2 and Beetlejuice 2 to name but a few and 2024 is shaping up to be a very exciting one indeed. I'm sure there'll be plenty of surprises along the way too.
Will Fitzgerald - Pálás Programmer
My pick from this past year at Cannes, The Zone of Interest opens in February. Jonathan Glazer’s latest is not only a brilliant film but also a vital piece of film art. Not to mention a masterclass in sound design. You’ll be disoriented leaving the screen and haunted by it long after. Opening in March, director Ilker Çatak’s The Teacher’s Lounge is a European arthouse delight. In her first leading role, shooting star Leonie Benesch plays a young teacher in who brushes up against colleagues and her students’ parents when a series of petty thefts hits the school. The script twists morality, bureaucracy, and social etiquette to wonderful, squirming effect. Kore-eda is back in 2024, re-teaming with Shoplifters standout actress Sakura Ando, in his own Rashomon style drama, called Monster. The Japanese master does it again. And the film I’m most looking forward to seeing has got to be Kneecap. I’ve been following the making of the film and the early footage did not disappoint. Can’t wait to see what kind of waves Kneecap’s signature style makes in Park City before Irish audiences get to see it, probably late next year.
