“I have seen things in this world that would have made Isaac Newton crawl back into his mother’s womb.”
Lily-Rose Depp, I’m so sorry I ever doubted you! Nosferatu is the scariest film I’ve seen this year and quite possibly my favorite Robert Eggers film to date. He manages to breathe new life into the classic vampire tale while still doing right by F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film. The gothic horror aesthetic is gorgeous and he lovingly pays tribute to German Expressionism through his striking use of shadows and silhouettes. Bill Skarsgård’s performance is perturbing and petrifying. The cinematography, camerawork, sound design, editing, score, and production design are all immaculate. Normally I’d say there’s no reason to remake a classic. But honestly, if Robert Eggers wants to remake any other silent films, I think we should let him.
