Sean Baker is the filmmaker of the month on LaCinetek!
American director born in New Jersey in 1971.
After studying cinema at New York University, Sean Baker directed his first film Four Letter Words in 2000, where he offers a humorous take on American youth. A figure in independent cinema, he writes, directs, and edits his early low-budget feature films, using a typical DIY [do it yourself] aesthetic.
Focusing on marginalized figures, he has made several portraits of immigrants and sex workers. He gained international recognition with Willem Dafoe - was included in the "Top 10 Films of the Year" list by the American Film Institute, followed by Red Rocket, which was selected for competition at Cannes in 2021, before Anora won the Palme d'Or in 2024.
