A beautiful representation simultaneously of folk horror and 1950s horror. During a time period where American horror was obsessed with sci fi and giant bugs, Finland looks to the past, to a pre Cristian nation, at its history and ancestry. To a time of oral tradition through songs and stories. To a frigid landscape and the small groups who brave it. The black and white and use of shadow enhances the scares (even though there’s no traditional jump scares as we know them) and the overall sense of dread. It is well acted and well shot. I struggled a bit with the pacing and story, but had the synopsis on hand to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers. Would be down to watch again and fully immerse myself in it, considering the short runtime.

Last year, when The Substance came out, a lot of people were surprised to find out it was not one of my favorite movies of the year. Being a fan of Cronenberg, I’d have to be a fan of it…. Right?

My probably with that film was its bombardment and reliance on gore, shock, and overt sexuality to prove its point.

Don’t get me wrong, these are valid tools, and under the right balance and amount of subtlety, can work, and have worked extremely well in some of my favorite films. After all, I’m a fan of American Psycho, Fight Club, and similar movies that were deemed at the time too shocking or violent in order to get their point across about violence in our culture. But there is a line. I often use Oliver Stone as doing himself a disservice with his sensationalism in Natural Born Killers. And while I love Harmony Korine, I’ll be the first to it how unnecessary the first half of Spring Breakers can be sometimes (though I get the repetitive nature of the partying and nudity was the point).

Anyways, getting back to this film (sorry for the long tangent), this film was everything I wanted The Substance to be. They have similar themes about the desire for beauty, the pressure our culture puts on women to look, act, and feel certain ways, and the overall roles and aspirations we force women to have. The big differences  are obviously the period piece nature of this film vs the modern and sometimes 1980s/1990s Substance feel, the fact that this is about comparing two young women as opposed to the young and old dynamic of The Substance (though that’s still there due to the mother character), and the fact that this is based off of a source material as opposed to an original story.

The way this film blends its influences (including Cronenberg, Fulci, Argento, Julia Ducournau, etc) with the original bloodier version Cinderella is  masterful. The story perfect blends its setting in the past with its more modern sounding score in a way that is not too jolting. It actually makes sense and help drive its point across. It shows that these are timeless themes, and these human struggles and feelings are natural due to the constant pressure of society, parents, and ourselves. There is plenty of gore and parts that could make you feel squeamish, and there are moments of nudity, but I feel the pacing was absolutely brilliant to make sure those moments did not overtake the story as a whole.

I also got multiple vibes from other films but not in a way that I felt they were ripping them off. The nods were subtle. And even though you probably are already familiar with the story of Cinderella, it keeps you guessing throughout due to its natural feeling of uncertainty with short bursts of darkness and dark humor.

Overall, I’m really impressed with this adaptation and will watch it again as some as I can stomach it (pun intended).

Well, I didn’t expect to find a random Corey Feldman movie today that I hadn’t already heard of. And I certainly did not expect to like it as much as I did.

An awkward dark comedy in the vein of Twin Peaks by David Lynch, anything by The Coen Brothers, or After Hours by Martin Scorsese. And while it never achieves the legendary status of those films, shows, or directors, it has a certain charm and style to it. Almost noir-ish, thanks to the old hotel the events take place. And Corey as a bumbling, socially awkward character is a nice change of pace.

Ultimately it suffers in the 3rd act when some but not all of the questions are answered, like so many films do when it solely relies on an interesting premise, and I don’t know how much more there would be to get upon a second viewing, but I’d like to think that there is. I’d like to think that there are new layers to unpack. I’m probably wrong. But for now, it’s a nice dream.

I keep coming back to this film.

Maybe it’s because of Hugh Grants perfect acting.

Maybe cause it’s of its unique and creepy setting.

Maybe cause of its slow build up and great twists.

Maybe it’s cause the dialogue mimics similar conversations that I have had with friends (monopoly’s origins, the Lana Del Rey/Radiohead court course, similarities in religions, etc).

Maybe because it’s an excuse to listen to “The Air That I Breathe” by The Hollies multiple times in a movie.

Whatever it is, I know it’s not a perfect movie. The ending leaves the viewer with wanting more and for all the questions it raises it rarely gives answers (much like a character is criticized for within the movie).

Whatever it is, I appreciate the attempt. I appreciate the vibe. And I appreciate the attention to detail.

Sion Sono never ceases to amaze. Even when you think he’s going to handle an already crazy subject matter and play it off like a normal horror movie, he finds a way to make it a Sion Sono film and drive it completely off the rails.

We all know that horror movies are always obsessed with things that don’t normally kill you actually killing you, and that could have been enough absurdity for most directors, but Sion chose to give you a compilation of wacky characters and equally wacky imagery. It is done in an over-the-top while still fun and shocking style that only contemporary Takashi Mike could have done. This starts like a typical J-Horror story, but through great casting and build up, ends as an unforgettable experience. I haven’t completely decided if I loved it, but am eager to watch it again.

Rosemary’s Baby… Brooklyn Edition.

The Sentinel came out 9 years after the aforementioned movie and 4 years after The Exorcist. It came out 1 year after The Omen, and 3 years before The Shining. Like the majority of those films, it was based off of a book. Why is this important to know? Maybe I’m trying to justify that it should be mentioned alongside those classics. Or maybe I’m just trying to understand that so much has already been done before, and it’s easy to dismiss it as another clone.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I acknowledge its faults. But it is another testament to the great style that came hand in hand with horror movies from the 70s. It is stylish, psychedelic, demonic, and a snap shot of a time and a city long gone. It even makes a reference to that towards the end when a classic Brooklyn brownstone is demolished for a more modern art style, something we continue to see in gentrified neighborhoods.

It is a subtle horror film, with only a few moments of true horror. But like the slow burn of Rosemarys Baby, it is equally effective. The ending is absolutely insane, and the imagery of it is hard to forget. I enjoyed the diversity in the characters, and that is brought by a combination of up and comers (Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Sarandon, Christopher Walken, etc) as well as classic golden age of Hollywood actors (Martin Balsam, John Carradine, Ava Gardner, etc).

This film definitely deserves a rewatch.

Like in La Llorona, Jayro takes us on fantastical trip blending real life tragedy with surrealistic and supernatural elements, in way we have seen by Guillermo Del Toro (Pans Labyrinth and The Devils Backbone), and the movie Sucker Punch. This movie however never achieved its outlandish styles of the mentioned films, but its grounded elements are what make it so dark and devastation. The inclusion of horror and mythical creatures help you to evade the darkness, only for a bit, only to be plunged back into moments of child abuse. Jayro has a way of bringing up events of the past, not allowing them to fade into obscurity, to show their true universal elements, while deliberately feeling like a story, not a documentary. With La Llorona, he evoked the war crimes and genocide perpetrated by the Guatemalan army under dictator Jose Efrain Montt. This time, how will anyone ever forget about a true event that happened at an orphanage in Guatemala in 2017.

At the beginning of the film, you’re not sure what you’re about to see….

A dark comedy? A horror? A psychological thriller?

By the end, you know exactly what you’ve seen, and you’re forever changed because of it. I may not always agree with his stylistic choices, as the film is going on, but by the end of it, I am reminded that this guy knows how to tell stories, both real and fake. And I appreciate people like him in the world, giving a voice to the voiceless. He ends the movie, dedicating it to the (and I’m paraphrasing) “fantastic creatures who live in an adults world, and who adults have turned their backs on”. It is 2024, and I am reminded of the children of Gaza. The children of Sudan. The children of Congo. The Duplessis Orphans of Canada.

And so on.

In the words of Jim Jeffries…

“I think we can all do better”.

Came across this movie on Shudder and was pleasantly surprised. Yet another impressive entry in the list of Danish horror/psychological horror films I’ve watched. Like many films from this country, it is a slow burn with beautiful scenery and locations, and a sense of dread throughout. Its twist and brutal ending reminded me of The Vanishing in a way, but people might find similarities to Funny Games or The Strangers. The acting is perfect for this film, from the adults to the kids, and I love the language and cultural barriers as the two families speak languages amongst themselves, but use English as a middle ground. Some things are lost in translation, some are purposely withheld. It is up to you and our protagonists to figure out what is implied, what is malicious, and what is all just one big misunderstanding. The whole film constantly teeters on this line, and that’s what makes it work so well.

As usual, a horror movie wouldn’t work if it weren’t for dumb decisions or people not speaking up, and this one might take the cake. But I think that is the whole point, as demonstrated by its signature line:

“Why are you doing this?”

“Because you let me”.

How much of our lives are controlled by others? How much do we let them dictate? Are we just casually going through the motions of work, school, life in general? Are we constantly looking for ways of escapism without ever really doing with the problems? When do stand up for ourselves? Where is our lines? What would we do in this situation?

These are just some of the questions brought up by this great film.

This review may contain spoilers.

Very surprised at how good this American Remake is. I am usually not a fan as they either lose the point, the pacing, or water it down for an American audience. This however pays tribute to the originally incredibly well. The first half plays out just like the original. The music, the locations, the casting, the dialogue is ripped straight from it. The only thing that seems to differ is the way James McAvoy plays his character, which is less subtle. He is more outlandish. Charismatic, but in a different way. That is just testament to how good he is at switching emotions, as we saw him do in Split. The pacing and build up of the original is all there, with some subtle touches of its own.

The second half completely differs from its original counterpart. Many liberties are taken. More side plots and additional moments we never saw in the story. It Americanizes the movie. But yet, because the director and the cast have already shown their technical abilities and showed the heart and soul of the original film, I don’t mind these changes. With all the new information added, it would almost be a disservice to end the film the way the original ended. This one has to change the ending. It can’t be the soul crushing and bleak ending of the original. The cast has worked too hard on this, giving out some phenomenal performances. The director has kept us on the edge of our seat too long.

The original is such a subtle and beautiful film with an ending that seemingly comes from out of nowhere and hits you like a rock (no pun intended). This one creates so much tension for so long. I thought it was going to be like how I felt with the American remake of The Vanishing. I’m happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised with this movie throughout as I enjoyed its initial similarities and eventually differences.

Oz Perkins has never successfully landed a movie for me. There are elements I like about his films. Longlegs is no different. Great old school (grainy 70s film) feel. Interesting concept (psychological horror mixed with serial killer and satanic panic elements). Classic rock soundtrack. But there are elements that fall short. Pacing is a big part of it. But the biggest part of it, and probably most surprising part of it is how unnecessary Nick Cage is in this film. I’m never not needed a cameo role from him before. But his over the top performance is forced, uninspired, and comical (not a good way).

Nick Cage has unimportant outbursts, random singing parts, never explained white makeup, and the only reason I can think of trying to be creepy for creepy sake. Instead of taking their time trying to create a memorable character by playing it straight (think Robin Williams in Insomnia or One Hour Photo), the film feeds into stereotypes of Satanists, rock/heavy metal musicians/fans, and feels like a lazy cop out when so much attention to detail was put into locations and cinematography.

The reason the phrase “Hail Satan” works so well in Rosemary's Baby worked is because of the clash of normal/high society saying it, with joy. This is absolutely believable. They didn’t need to look like a clown to say it. They didn’t need to act creepy when saying it. They just said it. This is the thing that Oz struggles to understand about horror. He knows how to create creepy situations. He knows how to build tension. He knows how to create creepy images. But then he doesn’t know what to do next. He doesn’t know what kind of tone he wants. He doesn’t know how the movie should develop. He doesn’t know how to end it. I want to like him more because he is a descendent of horror royalty, but of the 4 movies I’ve seen of his, I’m still waiting to see a complete film that I enjoy.

Children’s movies shouldn’t hit this hard, but I’m glad it does. This taps into a niche style of movies/shows for kids that has the psyche and important things to say such as Hey Arnold. As a kid, you enjoy the stories, as you get older, you realize how deep it gets, and that’s part of the lasting impression. It doesn’t talk down to its audience. It never assumes that kids won’t understand the human complexities of emotions. It simply breaks it down into universal ways of understanding while giving adults plenty to dwell on, so people of all ages can enjoy it. The first one was able to accomplish this very thing and this second one is completely on par with the first one. Fun and entertaining, but it’s possible to see some adults tear up while watching it.

be of the few American remakes that it as enjoyable as its European counterpart.

I mean when you have a movie about a killer elevator the bar is not set high.

And the insane premise, wild kill scenes, absurd characters, cheesy dialogue that almost boarders sexism and racism is not lost in this pre 9/11 movie. In fact some of the “Bin Laden” and “Twin Tower” jokes and references are not lost upon viewers seeing that this was released in the Netherlands 5 days before 9/11.

The original film cheesiness may be lost in translation since I have never seen it in its original language, only English dub. But there are some moments that seem to pay tribute to that fact with characters that seem dub (maybe that’s just bad production or maybe it’s intentional). But aside from shot to shot moments there are laugh out loud moments that really pay tribute to the original, while pushing past the original with many moments of “it won’t go there” (spoiler alert: it does go there).

A balance of moments of cringe cliches and unexpected fun. It has its side plots similar to the original (and while they’ve been changed a bit it doesn’t take away enough from the main plot or its similarity to the original).

While the original is not one of my favorite movies, I praise it for being an entertaining low budget horror film that I like to revisit. And now I feel the same way about this remake. I would definitely watch it with friends to see their reaction to a lot of those “what the heck” moments, as well as great cast of cameos and “oh I know that actor/actress” moments.

I didn’t think my first long review in a while would be for a killer elevator movie, but consider me inspired!

I never thought I’d give a movie about spiders such a high rating. As someone who has feared them all my life, I tend to avoid movies about them. And for whatever reason, I decided to challenge myself by getting through this one (I really don’t know the answer as to why I did it… just looking at the trailer filled me with so much dread and anxiety).

Maybe it was my completion-ist mentality. I know the director is tied to an Evil Dead movie. I try to watch everything on Shudder. I love French Horror Films.

For whatever reason, I watched it. This is what I expected Cobweb to be like, which despite its name I got through pretty easily. This was a claustrophobic, and also panic inducing watch that required me to take frequent breaks to decompress. Now I know this movie won’t be like that for everyone. I know some people will get along fine and think nothing of it. To them it’ll be a simple thriller. For me with it was an experience I won’t soon forget, but wish I could. It is well made, well shot, and decently acted. The location (an apartment complex) becomes a character in the movie, thanks to the spiders who are actively changing the landscape and making it their own. People have made comparisons to Rec or Cronenberg’s Shivers, and it’s definitely hard not to think of a plethora of horror movies that take place in apartment complexes, turning home and the familiar into a place of danger. For me, it was impossible to think of anything else but the spiders.

Wasn’t the biggest fan of the original film, and this documentary on the making of The Tunnel didn’t change my opinion on it. While there is some cool behind the scenes and making of elements, it a long documentary that drags on way more than it needs to. The majority of it is spent on the people involved talking about how groundbreaking it was, and hearing them compliment themselves that much becomes quite tedious after a while.

Focuses mostly on the court case of the young girls who stabbed another girl and said that they did it for Slenderman, a little bit on Slenderman’s origins, legacy, and impact, and focuses on the internet as a whole by showing the weird dark rabbit holes we’ve all gone down. In this case, it fails at really being great at any one particular topic as it briefly glances over each topic in an almost back and forth fashion. But it does cover a lot of ground over the course of its runtime. Not the most exciting documentary, especially when dealing with such a creepy subject matter. But it gets the job done.
