While the film is a bit rangy and amblin' and could have moved with more of a purpose it holds the viewer's attention. Mellencamp was wise in surrounding himself with capable performers, though his performance for a first timer is relaxed and solid.

It was also a good decision for the two lead actresses to not only resemble each other but have feisty, strong personalities (though Kay is by far the harder article) making him being drawn to both understandable.

Completed! Though her biggest claim to fame was her inimitable performance as Morticia Addams on TV she was a superlative actress who was perhaps too unique for major film stardom.

  1. King Creole

Elvis's best movie, performance and cast to work with. Carolyn is very moving as the hard luck Ronnie.

  2. A Hole in the Head

A real showpiece role as a free spirit who can't understand Sinatra's feelings of responsible.

  3. Career

A lovely piece of work, the best in the film, as a lonely press agent.

  4. Sail A Crooked Ship
  5. A Ticklish Affair
  6. Who Killed Julie Greer?

This was the debut episode of The Dick Powell Theatre, which ended up serving as the pilot for the TV series "Burke's Law". It provided a fantastic showcase for Carolyn Jones to display her versatility.

  7. Marjorie Morningstar
  8. The Bachelor Party

A depressing slog of a film whose only bright spot is Carolyn's few minutes on screen. So good she was Oscar nominated, one of the shortest ever to receive the honor.

  9. The Opposite Sex

Carolyn's part is small but she's so charming and funny she makes you wish it was larger.

Completed!

The ultra glamorous Miss Francis dressed up many a creaky weeper in her day as well as some fine comedies.

Underrated and more talented than given credit for, apparently even by herself, she became disgusted with the studios and ended up working strictly for the cash until she quit films in the mid-40's. A shame because as her work in In Name Only showed she would have made an excellent villainess in film noir but it was coming into vogue just as she bowed out.

  1. In Name Only

Both Carole and Cary are excellent but it's Kay's silkily rotten to the core Maida who walks away with the picture.

  2. One Way age
  3. The Feminine Touch
  4. Jewel Robbery
  5. Trouble in Paradise
  6. The Goose and the Gander
  7. Girls About Town
  8. Man Wanted

Kay is wonderful too bad she's up against that lump of nothing David Manners. He hurts the film.

Often wasted in standard leading lady roles she could be restrained and dignified but was at her best when she had a chance to cut a little loose and bring forth her ability to infuse her character with a sly knowingness.

A pert and pretty but somewhat bland blonde leading lady of the 30's until her mid-career hair color switch to brunette transformed and sharpened her into a much more vivid and compelling screen presence. She and film noir were made for each other.

Her early films seem to be among the most elusive. I still have one-Week Ends Only-that isn't at present considered lost or tied up in rights issues to try and track down.

  1. Scarlet Street

Bennett and noir were a perfect fit but never more so than when she was under the direction of Fritz Lang and this collaboration is the best of the lot.

A vastly talented performer whose personal demons cost her deeply. Though she apparently preferred the stage, which s for her small cinematic output, she communicated with the camera lens superbly and it's a pity she didn't do more films.

I've completed her filmography as far as seems possible. The very early The Village Squire appears to exist only in a print at the British Film Institute, though there is a clip of some of her performance (or perhaps all of it) on YouTube.

  1. Gone with the Wind

You only need to watch the multitude of screen tests of other actresses who were considered for Scarlett to see Vivien's absolute rightness for the role and how well she understood her.

  2. Waterloo Bridge

Nothing will top her Scarlett but Vivien's performance as the tragic Myra in this is a very close second. Out of their respective filmographies this was the favorite of both Vivien and costar Robert Taylor.

  3. St. Martin's Lane
  4. A Streetcar Named Desire
  5. That Hamilton Woman
  6. Ship of Fools
  7. The Deep Blue Sea
  8. Anna Karenina
  9. Fire Over England

A fine example that still waters run deep. While she always displayed a placid dignified exterior she was able to play complex troubled characters with the best of them. She is difficult to rate because even if the film is not the greatest she was always consistently good and frequently much more than that.

  1. All the Way Home

An extremely heavy film full of woe but it contains what is probably Jean's strongest performance, a high mark to hit.

  2. Angel Face
  3. Elmer Gantry

Lancaster is rightly acclaimed for his work here but Jean's Sister Sharon is equally strong. Why she went un-nominated in a year she should have won is a mystery.

  4. The Grass Is Greener

The film is not quite the saucy souffle it wants to be but Jean steals the film from the other three very able performers with a performance full of humor and sly charm.

  5. So Long at the Fair
  6. The Thorn Birds

Along with Barbara Stanwyck Jean steals the thunder of the lead duo with work of assured quiet authority. Fee is a tough nut of immense strength, that she doesn't come across as a harsh martinet is entirely thanks to Simmons work.

Though he had a solid career he was never really appreciated for just what a fine actor he was, nor is he nowadays.

He worked his way up through many, many bits where if he received any billing at all it was along the lines of "Cop" or "Waiter Captain" so I've left them out and only ranked the roles that had some substance to them.

  1. The Hard Way

Starting out with his usual hale fellow well met persona Carson skillfully navigates Albert's sad descent as he is crushed by his wife's fame and his sister-in-law's ruthlessness.

  2. Mildred Pierce

A perfect example of how his work wasn't fully appreciated, his is the equal of the brilliant work turned in by Eve Arden and Ann Blyth who both received nominations but Carson went unacknowledged.

  3. A Star Is Born

Matt Libby is a reptile but Carson allows us to see how the many indignities heaped upon him by Norman's callous disregard for him helped to make him that way.

Completed. She was beloved and acclaimed but I still think she was undervalued. The woman could do everything! Though I've seen all her TV films I'm ranking only her theatrical features.

  1. This Happy Feeling

Underknown little gem with Debbie at her most delightful, a suave Curt Jurgens bringing just the right touch of Continental charm, a divinely wry Alexis Smith and a scene stealing Estelle Winwood as the tippling housekeeper Mrs. Early.

  2. Tammy and the Bachelor
  3. Mary, Mary
  4. How the West Was Won

I love this entire long sprawling multi character epic but Debbie is the linchpin and through-line that ties the whole thing together which she carries off well. She also shares a surprisingly simpatico chemistry with Gregory Peck, on paper the two seem mismatched but they work wonderfully together.

Being a 20th Century Fox contractee during the box office reign of Shirley Temple Jane was never going to hit the top but she held a strong second position for many years, even remaining at the studio longer than Shirley.

A talented, pert and ebullient screen presence her vehicles were by and large standard affairs designed to show how plucky that determined Jane could be! It's to her credit that she was able to prop them up and keep them entertaining for as long as she did.

Her parents had invested her money wisely and she was able to retire at 21 but after taking a ten year break for marriage and children she returned as a popular and well respected character actress, and renewed fame as TV's Josephine the Plumber, well into her later years.

I still have two of her starring films to see-1937's Wild & Woolly and 1941's Small Town Deb (the screenplay of which she wrote herself) before her filmography is complete.

Perhaps he wasn't an actor of enormous scope but was always reliably good and a welcome presence though never quite big enough in personality for major stardom. His everyman relatability is surely why his biggest success came on the more intimate medium of television.

A fine performer with a forceful yet warm presence and a rich mellow voice. While she achieved cult status with The Creature from the Black Lagoon she never found that one role that would have moved her into full fledged stardom.

A pity since she was a very capable actress, nonetheless she had a steady and solid almost 70 year long career appearing in a short based on her autobiography a few months before her recent ing.

She segued from theatrical films to television in the 60's and onward only making brief returns so I've included her television films as well. I have about a half dozen of her films still to find.

One of my favorites!

A very underappreciated actress who came along in the wrong decade to suit her assertive, forceful screen presence. She would have been ideal in the 30's and 40's but in the 50's where the model was a more timid perfect wife/girlfriend rather than a hard charging career woman she was somewhat left adrift. A actress capable of great insight and heartbreaking delicacy but also, especially as she grew older, a performer who was completely unafraid to display her inner hambone to the nth degree. She could boomerang from a completely undisciplined showoff to an exemplary thespian from one picture to the next but she was always watchable.

She did a great deal of television work so I've included those movies.

  1. The Chapman Report

As an affluent but neglected wife whose loneliness leads her to a foolish decision Shelley cuts through the script's soap opera leanings to show the complexities of her situation.

  2. The Poseidon Adventure
  3. Executive Suite

Shelley's role is small in this all-star cast but she makes the lonely but proud Eva memorable.

The gravel voiced goddess was perhaps too similar to Anne Bancroft, to the point of taking over Bancroft's role in The Miracle Worker stage production when she left to make the movie, to achieve top tier film stardom but she was a tremendous always reliable and interesting actress. After her initial burst of film activity the majority of her work was on the small screen so I've included her output there.

Perhaps the most beautiful of them all, such things are subjective but there is no question she was breathtaking, and as we've come to learn fiercely intelligent and misunderstood.

He's an actor for whom my iration has grown as I've become more familiar with his filmography beyond his two best known films-Shane & This Gun for Hire. Since before hitting his stride with Gun he was mostly cast in minor often insignificant roles I've only ranked his films from that point on of which I've seen all but one-Hell Below Zero.

  1. This Gun for Hire
  2. The Great Gatsby

While all Gatsby versions are flawed (and this one is no exception-Betty Field is all wrong as Daisy) Alan Ladd fits the role better and is more at ease with the language than anyone else I've seen.

  3. Lucky Jordan
  4. The Blue Dahlia

A perceptive actress on film but the stage was her home, and rightly so, having seen her in The Bell of Amherst in a small Wilmington theatre she was both electric and magical. A memory that will last a lifetime.

That said her picture work (both theatrical and television) is small but there is much fine work in it.

I have two extremely rare films of hers, The Poacher's Daughter & Bronte, still to see.

  1. The Belle of Amherst
  2. The Last of Mrs. Lincoln
  3. The Haunting
  4. A Doll's House
  5. East of Eden
  6. The Christmas Wife
  7. Requiem for a Heavyweight
  8. I Am a Camera

The prototype for Cabaret with Julie as a very different (but similar in some ways) Sally Bowles.

A recent discovery and a delightful one. With her sandpaper voice and comic timing she injects humor into her movies effortlessly. Many of her pictures were low budget affairs but she's always solid gold.

I still have quite a few of her films to see, which is a pleasant prospect. A pity she's not better ed.

  1. If You Knew Susie
  2. She Wrote the Book
  3. Show Business
  4. She Gets Her Man
  5. The Traveling Saleswoman

Inspired by others I've seen I thought it would be fun to rank the various performers filmographies that I've either completed or that I've been working towards finishing. I've focused mostly on theatrical films but if they have significant television films on their sheet those are included as well.

Usually the ranking is based on my preference for the performer's work in a particular film not necessarily the overall quality of the picture.

  1. Dark age
  2. The Magnificent Ambersons
  3. The Opposite Sex
  4. Since You Went Away

Sunny and effervescent onscreen with a uniquely froggy voice that still sounded good when she sang she managed to extend her dominance at the top by seguing from girl next door of the 40's to the Perfect Wife of the 50's.

  1. Good News
  2. Woman's World
  3. Executive Suite
  4. The Glenn Miller Story
  5. The Opposite Sex
  6. Best Foot Forward
  7. A Stranger in My Arms
  8. Little Women

Not bad version of the Louisa May Alcott classic even if at 32 June is really stretching it as Jo.

  9. Girl Crazy

June's only in the film for about 5 minutes but she makes a memorable impression in a musical number where she literally beats the hell out of Mickey Rooney.

Completed!

A blonde beauty with a great talent, an odd unsettled vibe and a perplexing and frustrating career.

Apparently of her own choosing she shied away from what would have been mega-stardom by turning down Bonnie & Clyde, Elaine in The Graduate, Lolita, True Grit, Norma Rae, Cactus Flower, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Rosemary's Baby, the 70's version of The Great Gatsby, Polanski's MacBeth, The Stepford Wives and The Rocky Horror Picture Show because she didn't enjoy the spotlight and when fame came knocking pursued projects that interested her rather than ones that would further her career.

  1. Play It as It Lays

Along with A Safe Place these are opaque hard to like films but they represent the zenith of Tuesday's acting prowess. She's amazing in both films.

  2. A Safe Place
  3. Lord Love a Duck
  4. Pretty Poison
  5. The Crucible

A high class TV version of Miller's play with Tuesday a memorably vicious Abigail.

  6. Reflections of Murder
  7. Something in Common

Inspired by Evelyn Rose's Classic Movie Birthday Calendar list I'm borrowing her idea and am going to try and watch a new film each day by a performer that I like whose birthday falls on that day. Usually it will be one for each day but occasionally I might watch two different performers films who fall on the same day.

Right now the list will start April 1st but if possible I'll backtrack and fill in the first three months if they qualify.

April 1st-Wallace Beery-The Man from Dakota (I'd prefer Debbie Reynolds or Jane Powell but I've completed their respective filmographies).
April 2nd-Diane Cilanto-The Woman for Joe.
April 3rd-Mary Anderson-Within These Walls
April 4th-Rosemary Lane-Trocadero
April 5th-Walter Huston-Law and Order (Would loved to have done a Bette Davis, Gregory Peck or Melvyn Douglas film but all that I have left for them-only 1 or 2 each-are so obscure I've never been able to find them.)
April 6th-Joi Lansing-The Atomic Submarine (She was really much more of a TV girl so finding something with any kind of significant role, and her part is small, in film that I hadn't seen was tough but she looked great!)

One of the all-time greats able to be believably vicious or the kindest, most gentle of men. So of course he was showered with accolades and veneration....nope. Never a single Oscar nomination and graylisted during the McCarthy years for his liberal views. Appalling.

Excepting a few missteps, what the hell was he doing in The Ten Commandments?, he was always compelling on screen.

  1. Scarlet Street

A tough call with so many classic performances to choose from but this is probably EGR's deepest most complex piece of work.

  2. Night Has a Thousand Eyes
  3. The Sea Wolf
  4. The Woman in the Window
  5. Key Largo
  6. Double Indemnity
  7. Flesh and Fantasy

All three of the short stories comprising this are very good but the middle one with EGR and Thomas Mitchell is probably the best with both men outstanding.

The coolest of the cool. When he was disengaged his performances verged towards the somnolent but that was rare. Usually his work was so smooth and laid back it seemed like he wasn't trying but his ease made him eminently watchable and often the best thing in his films. On those occasions when he really connected with the character he was magnificent.

He worked a great deal in his later years and in low budget Westerns in his salad days and there about a dozen of those films I still need to locate but I've seen all his major work.

  1. The Lusty Men

As the circuit rodeo buck who's running out of chances and makes a grab for redemption Mitchum is the best he ever was matched every step of the way by Susan Hayward.

  2. Out of the Past
  3. Home from the Hill
  4. The Night of the Hunter

What is there left to say about someone who may be the Ultimate Movie Star?

At times, especially in the early sound years, the careful diction could get in the way of her performances but she was never less than professional, even at the end when she was appearing in cheap junk-but always above the title!, and frequently much more than that.

As with all great stars she appeared in some dogs, perhaps more than her share, but good film or bad she held the screen and was always watchable.

I've seen all her sound films and though several of her silents were lost in the great MGM vault fire of 1964 there are a quartet that are still presumably extant that I'm on the hunt for.

  1. Humoresque

Crawford considered her work in Possessed, the film she made after this, to be her best but I think her raw, insecure and lost Helen in this better.

  2. Mildred Pierce
  3. Grand Hotel

    Crawford's best early work.

  4. Goodbye, My Fancy
  5. The Damned Don't Cry
  6. The Women
  7. Strange Cargo
  8. Flamingo Road

The notoriously difficult Miriam was a very gifted actress who self-destructed her career by her showboating behaviors burning nearly every professional bridge behind her. If not for her rapport with William Wyler who could rein her in her career would have been even more abbreviated since she snagged her last few decent roles in his films.

The ravishing Rhonda who we lost just this week at 97 may not have been one of the cinematic legends of Golden Age Hollywood but she was a pleasing presence in all her films and when provided the opportunity a good actress. By her own ission rather than waiting for great scripts she accepted average ones for good money....well a girl's gotta eat! And many of those films are breezy if innocuous flicks.

I have only one of her pictures-the European shot "Run For Your Wife"- to still locate to complete her filmography.

Never an actor of deep emotional resources he was still more talented than he is often given credit for.
