Reyna Cervantes’s review published on Letterboxd:
I’ll be honest. I was a doubter/hater.
But then I saw Twisters in 4DX.
While Twisters is the prime example of the brain dead summer blockbuster, I can’t helped but be charmed in the moment by its portrayal of Americana. When it’s not trying to justify its uses of semi-real scientific explanations, Twisters relishes grabbing the bull by the horns and riding out the storm. Twisters does something a lot of big blockbusters forget to do: it has fun! Never have I wanted to YEE HAW more in a movie.
Glen Powell’s character reinforces the idea of his. He brings an ungodly amount of charisma and charm to the material with movie Star gravitas. He turned me into a believer with his role that celebrates every awesome about braving your fears and riding out your personal storms. He honestly has the funnest moments of the movie that involve blaring country music, lighting off fireworks, and filming YouTube videos. Things that America is about!
Daisy Edgar-Jones on the other hand… her character is unfortunately embedded in the most uninteresting aspects of the movie. A scientific storyline that oddly tiptoes around global warming to avoid political conversation and a trauma storyline. She’s fine I guess but honestly it causes the story to feel like two different movies at the same exact time. It’s kind of baffling.
At the end of the day, Twisters is a goddamn blast. A fun as hell summer blockbuster that feels like a celebration of everything great in humans. Sometimes it’s nice to go to the movies and have an escape, that’s exactly what Twisters provides.
Oh and 4DX for this one rips. Feels like the format was made for movies like this.
