There’s a bunch I like about this, with Wan’s fluid camera/resistance to over-cutting (that “ghost interrogation” sequence is a stunner) causing it to stand out among modern blockbusters, but it’s basically a collection of trailer-ready scares, stretched out to 134 interminable minutes. Still love The Warrens though, who remain one of the warmest, most comforting screen presences in modern cinema.

Vastly underestimated this in theaters (as I hadn't revisited since), but Wan is so in control, and so effortlessly pulling something off that feels classically executed and rooted in character first/scares second construction. Jaume Collet-Serra’s STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, flipping the bird to Trump’s economy and then proceeding to engage in ostentatious one take fight scenes, and total chaos during the final reel. No one’s making mid-level action movies like he is right now; as he’s Tony Scott and Renny Harlin, wearing this rather gaudy DTV Brian De Palma dress. A total fucking blast.
