Dune: Part Two

2024

★★★★½

There's a kiss that happens in this movie where all I could think about was Jennifer Coolidge in The White Lotus saying "He was kinda...fucking his uncle."

On a serious note, I spent this entire film with chills running down my arms. Denis Villenueve has done the impossible; he has adapted the unadaptable, creating a film that, even with its changes, is truer to the book and the themes that Frank Herbert wanted to impart than any alternative has or could have been. I imagine that if readers in 1965 had interpreted Paul the way Denis portrays him in this film, in the way that Herbert intended—as a flawed leader rather than a truly pure, heroic figure—the author would have felt no need to write Dune: Messiah in order to clear up any misconceptions about the character. Denis Villeneuve understands the source material and it's so clear, the love and appreciation with which this film was made.

The only reason there's half a star off is because the sound in my theater was not as good/loud as I would've liked it to be, so the score and overall sound design didn't ROCK me the way it did in the Part One. Kicking myself for not seeing this in an IMAX theater for the first viewing but there isn't a good one near me and I just couldn't wait. Will definitely be seeing it again and in IMAX as soon as possible.
