Aftersun is all about how we process the past. As an adult, Sophie is desperate to understand her father's depression, to make sense of a man who secretly kept his turmoil hidden. She reviews her history, through memories, through photos and video, always within reach of her father yet always impossibly and irreversibly out of reach. The way in which this film from Charlotte Wells explores this emotional distance, this inability to comprehend, in a manner that reveals how our fragmented past can make it difficult to feel whole in the present, to envision a clear future.
