This film stands as a charming piece of history from its time, with its delightful depiction of 1980s technology and the pervasive fear of nuclear war that preoccupied audiences. The witty and entertaining characters, including a standout performance from Matthew Broderick, who portrays an ordinary computer nerd that becomes embroiled in a government conspiracy involving an Artificial Intelligence intent on causing World War III, makes this film relatable to modern audiences as well.

John Badham’s “WarGames” is a techno-thriller that is both quaint and prescient. Centering around buzzing, ticking, and beeping 1980s technologies that may spell the end of humankind, the film revels in modems and two-color displays; but, more importantly, carries the classic and contemporary warning that that same technology can be humanity’s undoing. Combined with an energetic cast, a compelling narrative, and a mostly serious tone, the film’s message rewards its audience with a gripping, well-assembled drama.

This campy masterpiece answers the question: "What if John Hughes directed Doctor Strangelove?"

Striking a great tone between believable and absurd, WarGames raises some still-relevant questions about machine learning and automation, while still having Matthew Broderick run around a top secret military bunker undetected.

Despite its ridiculous premise, it manages to be extremely suspenseful at times. WarGames is a very fun rewatch!
