While I was doing press for my first feature film, after the third time I was asked, “what’s your deal with Kevin Smith” it occurred to me that I was known in some circles of the internet for being outspokenly critical of Kevin’s filmography. I won’t link the specific podcast that this mostly happened on, not because I am ashamed of my participation in it. It’s out there, it’s easy to find. They’ve even asked if I want them to take my episodes down and I’ve always said “nah.” It’d feel like a…cop out (sorry) at this point to try to erase what I’ve said about him online over the years.…

Possibly the worst Kevin Smith film ever made. Cloying pop culture references. Charmless actors. A script packed with shit like, "you're already a filmmaker, you just haven't made your first movie yet." You might as well settle in because even at less than 90 minutes this nonsensical nostalgia piece is a CHORE to sit through. This is The Fabelmans for a director who devolved into posting youtube videos of himself crying at a season finale of The Flash.

Pulls the ol’ Master of Disguise trick of padding the runtime with 10 minutes of end credits and bloopers. Also contains several brutally extended Grindhouse-style fake trailers for presumably the same reason.

You might think that doing a nostalgically sentimental, comically wish-fulfillment filled, self-mythologizing 80s slacker movie nerd coming-of-age/hangout movie origin story for himself shot at his own movie theater would have Kevin ionate enough that he'd put a little more effort than usual into directing his actors, assembling his shots, writing dialogue that doesn't make your eyes roll straight back into your skull ... And yet. "Wow, you sure know a lot about movies!" At least Clerks III, despite being one of the ugliest looking movies I've ever seen, felt like he was accidentally exposing something real and painful about how he's never progressed since his debut, only gotten old and sick and sad. This felt like he was shrugging out…
Kevin Smith’s FABELMANS, in the style of SUPERBAD, yet nowhere near as inspired as that may sound to fans of his. “You sure know a lot about movies!”
It’s so clunky and amateurish and full of such unnatural dialogue that more casual fans who haven’t checked in on his late period will surely to be stunned to find out this is what his screenplays sound like now. 1st-draft energy is putting it kindly. CLERKS this is not, and boy is it trying to be!

If nothing else, this is a step in the right direction for Kevin Smith, and the most watchable thing he’s made in a while. Oddly, the stuff that sounds the most like a Kevin Smith movie on paper — teens hanging out in a movie theater, watching flicks and talking about pop culture — was the part that didn’t land for me. (The faux movies playing at the Atlantic Cinemas are not exactly convincing, nor especially funny in their unconvincingness.)
Instead, I just really enjoyed all the sequences featuring the two young romantic leads, Siena Agudong and Austin Zajur, even if in one scene Agudong has to tell the Zajur character (who is clearly supposed to be a young Kevin Smith) “I think of you as the most interesting guy I’ve ever met ... And you're like the funniest person I know." Okay!
(Bonus half point for the hyper-specific Central New Jersey jokes at the expense of the dumpy Strathmore Cinema.)

It's more technically competent than his last few films but unfunny, free of character and dramatically inert. I don't mind Kevin Smith telling stories of his youth, but his memories are so soaked in nostalgia that there's nothing to grab onto.
