Yes yes yes, we’ve seen variations of this movie before, but what’s makes Opus truly frustrating is that it only scratches the surface of its thesis or worse, shows no interest in digging deeper. Ayo Edebri is obviously infinitely talented, but even her performance felt a bit stilted here, every line is delivered with a similar cadence, strangely flat and restrained.

It’s a mixed bag movie, well composed and confidently directed, but ultimately toothless.

this type of movie comes out once a year but this is the first one to have ayo edebiri in it so it’s automatically better. sorry i don’t make the rules

Don’t Worry Darling, I will Blink Twice to signal for us to Get Out if The Menu looks Mid this Summer.

Opus brings nothing new to the now saturated market of cult horror with subtext about “society”. It feels like an A24 parody, like an AI generated amalgamation of ideas from all the films listed above. It’s not doing anything new, exciting, or even entertaining. I saw this last night and I’m already struggling to what exactly happened. Not even the always charming Ayo Edebiri could save this mess for me.

It’s just a nothing movie? Nothing horribly offensive or outlandishly bad, but also what are we doing here??? Treading water on recycled ideas I guess.

Really feel like people were too hard on OPUS. It’s a sturdy debut feature.

Like I thought BLINK TWICE was politically bankrupt but people fell on their swords for that one. OPUS is a harmless lark that many decided needed to be pillaged. It’s just weird what people will go in on. Many of my colleagues will excuse any barely watchable mess by a venerated filmmaker under the pretense that they’ve earned it, when, in fact, they should be held to a higher standard. But then they’ll kick a film like this from a young filmmaker around. 

Anywho I don’t think OPUS is revolutionary but not every film from a Black filmmaker needs to be that. It’s just a fun feature…
