Joe Moore has a job he loves. He's a thief. His job goes sour when he gets caught on security camera tape. This movie is pure joy. So much Hackman yelling, equaled only by Delroy Lindo yelling. And Rockwell pulling the naif routine.
david mamet loves meticulous geniuses who carry out brilliant plans with the utmost diligence & precision....thats why hes a big fan of donald trump!!!!!!!!
an unpretentious caper dazzled with the spiciest of mamet's punch-gut dialogue. very crotchety, mamet loves the endless interplay between confidence games & performative earnestness. the script's absurd density of con-upon-con calls to mind the shallow hat-tricks of ocean's eleven, but heist is grounded in a working class attitude of unlikable people performing an unlikely task; mamet's got the visage of hermes on the stolen plane, he knows damn well what he's doing. maybe the last time that a film like this starred actors who actually looked like the kind of people who could pull off a job like this.
“Heist” is a film that shoots a straight shot into its genre — proving that you can steal suspense with just good ol fashioned gumption and character.
What director-writer David Mamet’s “House of Games” is to con films, his “Heist” is to robbery flicks. Both movies are populated by a crew of guys just one bad morning away from retirement. Both get by on a plot that somehow twists without ever feeling like it’s too slippery to grasp.
“Heist” follows Gene Hackman as a too-wise old thief who just wants to build a boat and sail into the sunset. He’s stopped by his fence, Danny Devito, who reminds him, “Everybody needs money. That’s why they call it money.” So, Hackman…
Without the theatricality and backroom lighting of something like House of Games, Mamet is mostly a bad director—stiff, unvisual, with maybe the worst sense of blocking of anyone to work in the genre of con games and conspiracies.
there’s a moment in this where Ricky Jay is asked if Hackman’s character is cool and he casually replies “my motherfucker is so cool, when he goes to bed, sheep count him” and he may or may not have just been talking about Hackman IRL — I’ve seen this a few times now and it still manages to feel multiple steps ahead of me
A thriller with quite a few turns and I almost guessed them all though.
Still a good one with some interesting mindgames and a satisfying ending.

Yep, I love me this Heist!
And I know this is the part where you think I’m insane and I lose all credibility… but which of us is perfect?
For my money, this film’s the best magic trick Mamet ever pulled. Super thick, multi-layered and incredibly thought out. The whole thing’s as cute as a pail full of kittens.
Gene Hackman, Delroy Lindo & Danny DeVito take on Mamet’s brilliant dialogue and make it sing. Sam Rockwell’s in full weasel mode and Ricky Jay kills it in one of his most poignant roles ever. It’s a hell of a thing.
To top it all…
Heist movies can be really bold,
And by the end the viewer is told:
Who's the marked man,
What's the main plan,
And how they wind up with the gold.
I was in the mood for some David Mamet dialogue, my nightly Gene Hackman fix and a heist movie, so why not watch David Mamet’s Heist.
I love a good heist movie. I like the build up, the actual heist, and the consequences that follow. Heist does all these pretty damn good.
While Heist isn’t must watch Hack, it is still Hack doing his thing. The Hack is helped a lot by Delroy Lindo, Little Danny DeVito, Rebecca Pidgeon, Sam Rockwell’s mustache, and my personal favorite: Ricky Jay.
Heist is a good movie. Check it out!!
The first couple thirds of this are pretty okay. Sure, the entire thing could have been avoided if Gene Hackman would have just put on his fucking mask. Yes, Sam Rockwell is painfully underused in this. And yes, there are a LOT of one-liners. But there's a lot of engaging and fun ACTUAL heist stuff going on to keep it interesting.
It's in the last third of the film when shit really hits the fan, though. Plot twists left and right, an unsatisfactory ending, and even MORE one-liners! But the absolute cream of the crop for me was the boat shootout. That could be a comedy short film on its own.
But, I don't wanna end this on a sour note. I WILL say this: if, like me, you're somebody who gets really excited by/into heist films, then "Heist" would definitely be up your alley. (If the title wasn't already suggestive enough...)
