Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

2016

★★★½ Liked

“I couldn't face myself if I gave up now. None of us could.”

Really wanted this to feel a lot better and recontextualized after Andor, and while some of it does, a lot of it doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong– the Cassian bits feel that much more powerful, poignant and tragic – but the fact that everything else kinda falls flat really ruins the moment. That’s not inherently the movie’s fault of course – it did come out 6 years prior– but it’s still unfortunately the result. Oh well. We still have Andor, and if we have this shaky and messy movie to thank for it, than I will have this any day of the week.

I suppose this feels more of a review or eulogy for Andor more than it is for Rogue One, but I’m fine with that. Truly monumental work.
