God damn perfect. I….I…love it. I just love it.
What a staggering achievement. Villeneuve’s supervision is reaching heights that precede his reputation.
If people from this generation cry that they missed the original Star Wars 45 years ago or they didn’t had the chance to experience Lord of the Rings for the first time two decades ago, then I’d say it’s fair to say they have the luxury to embrace a larger-than-life fantasy film that is not only viscerally epic but also richly made from a director that keeps laying out masterpieces, one after the other.
The portrait of the chosen one has been done and articulated so many times already. Here, it feels refreshingly intimidating that a hero is – slowly yet surely, becoming the worst imaginable antihero of your nightmare. A movie that encourages its audience to conquer the desert with Paul; just as well as to hold back our euphoria because a prophecy is about to change the nature of the game.
I’ll simplify my take on the cinematography, score, direction, sound design, and script with this :
In of displaying Arrakis: Immersive. Spectacular. Devastating.
In of handling the internal/external conflicts: Precarious. Corrective. Delusional.
Now put all these words in a cooking pot, and marinate it carefully. And boom. ↓↓↓
