DannyKlain’s review published on Letterboxd:
Even better a second time around. The call backs and motivations become even clearer, and I think the world building details are still there they’re just not as openly expository as part one. And it just is awesomez the tonal ability to be sincere and serious and funny without completely undermining yourself is so well done again. Butler and Bardem are my MVPs. Ferguson close behind.
Things that really stuck out to me a second time around:
1) the Geidi prime colosseum sequence, but more specifically, in the first viewing I didn’t really think about the black and white versus the color and the mechanics of it cause I was kinda so enrapt in what was going on, but when Baron Harkonnen floats out you see him go from those beige and whites to like fully black and white once he’s out of the shade and it doesn’t even feel like a transition it feels so real. I know some of film Twitter was pushing back on Greg Fraser hype but he really is amazing.
2) I stupidly didn’t think much about Paul’s journey in of the classic hero v villain archetypes. But this time around it was more clear to me than Paul was always on the villain path and that is especially well juxtaposed against the final shot of Chani in the desert, waiting to ride the word and a believer of her people. She is and has the potential to be the real chosen one the real hero because she believes in Fremen and not some made up prophecy that Paul has now accepted. Very cool to do that! Especially without being incredibly heavy handed imo.
My only remaining questions I have are I think because I don’t know the full story so I assume they will be answered in due time aka not until 2027.
