We asked Pete’s Dragon and A Ghost Story filmmaker David Lowery which directors he thinks we should be keeping an eye on.
His selections include Chloé Zhao and Marielle Heller—friends from his 2012 Sundance Lab days who are helming studio films (Marvel’s The Eternals and the Tom Hanks Mr Rogers project, respectively). Ryan Coogler was also in their Sundance year, notes Lowery. “It was a pretty extraordinary group of filmmakers. We’re all still in touch. To have someone else who’s doing something in parallel that you can compare notes with or vent to or let them vent back at me—it is so wonderful and so helpful and we continue to learn from each other, which is also a great thing.”
