Chris Conkling’s review published on Letterboxd:
3.75/5.
Almost felt as good as Dune, but there was something...off. It almost feels like it was overstuffed-as if he crammed Dune Part 2 and Dune Part 3 into 1 movie. It just needed some room to breathe.
You know that feeling, about 30 seconds before you become sandworm feed - where everything just starts to float. It is that sand melange. We got that feeling when we watched Dune, but it is just out of reach here. I didn't love it nearly as much as Dune.
However, this is glorious to watch in its splendor.
Things I loved:
The cinematography
The costumes
The grandness of everything
The SANDWORMS!!!!
That one scene where they are riding the sandworms - it was *everything*
It raised lots of things to think about - religion, politics, space travel, the Bene Gesserit
The set design
The Harkonnen world - it was fascinating
Things I didn't like:
Bloated casting (Christopher Walken, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor Joy) and they gave a half assed effort
Too much happening in the screenplay
The music was good but not nearly as good as it was in Dune
Too much focus on the action scenes
