Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary

2002

★★★★

I wasn't sure going in if I would like an adaptation from Guy Maddin since he's so good with originals, but that wasn't an issue at all. Maddin gets complete control here and uses it, and the material proves to be a good fit for his style - a ballet is silent to begin with and the operatic and dance elements are captured with his usual flair. There's a bit too much plot for the runtime but in typical ballet style, you can sorta just get the jist of it and still enjoy - having seen other adaptations helped me there too. Maddin is usually good for at least one intertitle that makes me laugh out loud and "Cuckold's Counterblow!" did the trick here.
