“this film is more interesting than i thought. it’s so rhythmic”

my name is the weeknd and women are ruining my life (until i fix them through the power and truth in my music). almost impressive that this is significantly more boring stupid than it is funny stupid given the premise but what else can you expect from the mind behind it comes at night. nearly every formal decision pissed me off; long take, shallow focus, metaphor-laden bullshit. emblematic of all the worst tendencies of modern “arthouse” movies. the ending is so funny it almost saved the movie for me

the first film of the 20’s. makes anything described with the “digital unreality” or “video game cinema” seem tame. like if you took the walking around moments of a ps2/3 game (which aesthetic it matches varies on a scene to scene basis), abstracted it through hell and back, and then threw in a metal gear rising fight scene for fun. transcends post-irony…
loved this so so much. creating a new communal history to draw inspiration from. we can’t just want to survive, we need to survive, we are paving the way for the next generation. spends way more of its runtime in ‘dolls hanging out’ mode than genre mode, and i’m definitely not complaining. maybe the first cinematic representation of a “girl without a dick is like an angel without its wings” t-shirt? the importance of creating and preserving community, we are…
