The Criterion Challenge 2025 Week 16. Watch a film that is currently out of print from the physical collection

“Explain this again?”
“How have you grown up on the shore and never played skee-ball?”

Jumping around a bit because I don’t have it in me right now to watch all 183 minutes of Kwaidan but I need to catch up on this challenge lmao.

“You shouldn't have been that sentimental.”

Maybe not noir in the classical sense but it’s got all the elements done up in the Hitchcockian way I love so much. Found myself leaning forward in my seat multiple times. Never knew where it was going next but I was along for the ride.

James Stewart playing Scottie as a sympathetic figure at first who turns into a villain is great stuff. The…

“I am not an elephant! I am not an animal! I am a human being! I am…a man!”

I’ve tried to find the correct words for this review multiple times but every time I come back to how heartbreaking, beautiful, and visually stunning the whole thing is. John Hurt’s performance tore me apart. The dignity and care he shows shines through the second we see him on screen. Hopkins is also fantastic. Flowers to Lynch, too, for getting so much out of his cast and creating something that’ll stick with me for a long time.

“Aren't you a little young for full-?”
”Aren't you a little old for video games?”

That final match was what it felt like getting multiple concussions in a Title Fight pit circa 2012 but running back in when they started playing 27.

Every second there’s combat it’s a 5 star movie I can’t look away from. The score and the crowds while these dudes are going at it had me fully…

“Get me on my feet”
”How're you doing?”
”Am I on my feet?”

This is my mom’s favorite movie, and while I can’t say that for myself, I see why she feels that way.

“I watched a whole entire ‘Dateline’ episode with this psycho brother and sister who kept their incest-bred kids hidden under the stairs of their Airbnb.”
“Also, that wasn’t ‘Dateline’, that was just the plot from the movie ‘People Under the Stairs’”

I wasn’t sure what to think of this before watching it but I had a blast! The whodunit aspect isn’t anything special but the cast and their collective comedic timing made up for it. It felt like they were…

“It's already over.”
“There ain't nothin' over ‘til it's over.”
“What's that from, the '80s?”
“That's probably the '70s.”

Did not expect to find myself crying multiple times during Rocky Balboa, but here we are. Everything about this was compelling and the emotions felt so real. It’s such a great ending to this arc of the franchise.
