Yep I too needed to search an explanation online as to how all of the Gordy stuff fits into the overall plot of the movie. Regardless this film was really solid! From the very beginning you can tell Jordan Peele puts his all into the direction and craft of the film. He clearly cares and believes in the story and message of this, something that was also great about Get Out.

But this is also a much more pleasingly ambitious story than that film, yet the heavy elements of sci-fi were really well executed. They managed to make the spectacle of an UFO (later a full-blown alien) look so grand, mysterious, yet in a weird way horrifyingly beautiful. The sound design and visual effects help a lot in building the film's mysterious and chilling atmosphere. The entire time I was sharing the characters' enthusiasm for seeing the alien, and therefore seeing him in full flesh was very satisfying to watch. It almost felt like you were inside the film; you get that immersed in this world.

I feel that the linking theme Peele intended for this film about spectacle and how it gets exploited was really strong and interesting. It's a subject that's pretty relevant with real life and it's treated with pure seriousness here, which I appreciate. And there's a lot of pretty clever symbolism in here that s the theme, which I appreciate in screenwriting.

But yet, I don't feel that the way Peele DEMONSTRATED the theme (especially of course with Gordy's relevance to the UFO stuff) was the most clear as it could have been. This was a result of the really dissapointing lack of further exploration or discussion we get about Gordy after the first half. This is the kind of movie that almost fully depends on external research of what it actually entails (outside of the watch itself) for it to fully work, especially if you're a general viewer and not a more eager viewer like myself who tries hard to understand the complexity of everything that unfolds on-screen.

I also feel that the characters, while enjoyable to follow, lacked any particular arc. Obviously the two leads spend the movie getting better and better towards catching the mysterious being from the sky, but it never felt that they ever went on an actual internal character arc to overcome the obstacles they were encountering. So while they were fun characters overall, I also wish they did more with them development-wise to prevent them from ing off as just plain archetypes.

I also strongly feel that Steven Yeun's character had the chance of being the most interesting character in the film, and what we did get of him was good and what he represents within the theme of the film was really great and clever, but it was very dissapointing to see him get killed off so quickly and then nothing about him is ever explored or discussed again. I feel this way about the overall Gordy scenes of the film too.

Despite some gripes I have with this film, I can confidently say that the good outweighs the bad. This is still a really wonderous and interesting film with great direction, craft and entertainment value put into it, and while some aspects of the story could have been improved, I'm satisfied with this overall. Really wonder how Us ends up fitting into the Peele ranking.

I have a pretty rocky relationship with this movie. Back in 2023 I considered this so bad that I used it as some sort of punching bag on my profile (where even the bio at one point read "I'll watch anything except Mission Impossible 2). This is definitely a flawed film, but it's also not the worst thing cinema has ever created. Many of the action is still great, ESPECIALLY the motorcycle chase which is undoubtedly pretty awesome.

I appreciate the unique direction John Woo goes for with the amount of slow-mo shots and many campy zoom-outs and zoom-ins. Even if I don't LIKE this style, I'm also grateful this wasn't a film you could say was blandly directed like most blockbusters nowadays. The plot of needing to stop a virus from getting into the world is a cool starter premise that is ideal for this franchise, especially with the fact that it isn't just some generic nuclear bomb threat.

What kills this movie for me though is how I just feel that it doesn't take itself seriously. The cheesy style (narmish screams and expressions, randomly melachonic soundtrack, and excessive slow-motion) gets so prominent at times to the point where it feels like a self-parody of this franchise. And for a film that is SUPPOSED to be an official part of the series, I don't like this at all.

Another problem that comes from this self-referential style is the lack of engagement I get with this movie. It just gets very boring at parts with how slow-moving it's edited to be. It's pretty much the second half only where the film gets occassionally fun. This gets to the point where you don't care all that much for Ethan Hunt as a character, nor his relationship with Nyah, whom I still think is a very bland forced love interest.

The villain is also way too humorous and hard to take seriously for his own good, even with solid moments where he feels like a threat. The general writing isn't the best either with a grating lack of twists and turns for me to be minimally interested or surprised in anything, not to mention the meme-worthy dialogue.

Generally speaking I don't hate this movie as much as before, as there's definitely many things to appreciate from it, but overall it just doesn't work for me on a personal level, especially when put in comparison to the other films. I haven't seen John Woo's other movies but I wonder if he has done a cheesy style like this before. I'm glad for others who do enjoy this movie though!

I finally know what live-action Sensei Wu will look like…

While this did feel like a satisfying conclusion to the first film, I honestly don’t think this was as good when you classify it as an individual movie. You can definitely feel the pacing dragging on, with more quiet moments of dialogue than action scenes; this wouldn’t be a huge deal if all of the quiet scenes we're substantial and engaging, but a lot of them really weren’t minus everything actually involving Beatrix. The action we do get is just as great as you’ll expect, but they’re also disappointingly short and quickly brushed over.

Even with how this film isn’t as well-constructed as the first, it’s still great overall. I really loved Beatrix’s character development and backstory and her journey of realizing the cost of her actions; Uma Thurman delivers an Oscar-worthy performance in both of these movies. The direction is still amazing with the action choreography and style (even if, again, it’s not as prominent), with some VERY pleasingly visceral and gory kills. The dialogue is still pretty good per Tarantino standards. Overall it’s while this movie slightly didn’t meet my high expectations, I still had a good time with it and it’s a fantastic second half for Vol. 1.

A sequel that in many ways does more with itself than its predecessor, delivering really fun banter between Ben Affleck and Jon Berthnal in addition to still being as elegantly directed and crafted. I felt that the first film spent a bit too much time focusing on establishing its lead character and universe and didn't focus on the actual story all that much, and this film corrects that with putting Wolff on an actual adventure for him to go through consistently while still developing him as a complicated character.

The action was well-done, with not the most memorable set pieces, but thankfully not much of the awful shaky-cam choreography either that a lot of action movies of this scale tend to have. I also enjoyed the attempts at a sillier movie with much more jokes and comedic situations for the leads, as the gags managed to land surprisingly well WHILE the plot and darker elements were still taken seriously (take notes, Marvel). While sometimes the pacing can drag, scenes can feel unecessary, and the actual plot and threat isn't the most interesting thing in the world, I had a fun time watching this film, and it definitely lives up to its predecessor.

I this film wowing me when I first watched it back in 2023, and it's still really enjoyable now. The premise might be cliched for some but it manages to still play out really cool and the surrounding mystery is consistently interesting. Brian de Palma directs really well with the diverse kinds of camera shots he does to show different aspects of the plot through specific angles; this is a type of visual decision that most of the later movies, while also amazingly directed, don't have in the same elegant way. The twists and turns are also very well executed and consistently surprising.

Tom Cruise is a great action star, even if sometimes his performance in the more emotional scenes doesn't really stick out. The stuntwork is expectedly great, with the computer hack and helicopter scenes in particular standing out as amazing and intensely raw action sequences. Sometimes the film gets a little slow and it isn't quite as impressively crafted overall as its successors (especially with some the outdated CGI), but overall this original film is still a blast to get through.

Now THAT'S what I call an action epic! This film fires on all cylinders and then some! From the highly confident and unique direction, to the visceral and extremely well-choreographed action and stuntwork, to the chilling acting performances, to the awesome use of non-linear chronology, to the grandly unforgiving action and overall style...this movie is a joy to behold! It's truly shocking that Tarantino, after making 3 grounded, dialogue-focused crime flicks, was able to suddenly make an ultra-violent, over-the-top adventure all of a sudden--and do it so fuding well! Maybe my only gripe with this movie is the lack of a conclusion, but I couldn't be any more confident that Vol. 2 will pay everything off in a super satisfying way. Quentin Tarantino, the man you are!

While probably the weakest Tarantino film I've seen so far, there's still plenty to enjoy here. The direction and dialogue-based writing are both still really strong and the performances pop with the characters pretty well, with the titular lead and Samuel L. Jackson being particular standouts. The editing is very zany and mostly precise, and the soundtrack is full of bangers.

I feel that the main problem with this film is the pacing, as I find it to flow a bit too slow, and the runtime is definitely way too long, with a couple of scenes feeling like they unnecessarily fill the length up. The lack of engagement value might also just be me though who isn't a big fan of heist films in general. Besides that I think this is a watchable and well-put together crime flick, though probably not one that stands out in the Tarantino flimography.

Apparently the idea for this movie came from the producers being on a vacation together and constantly getting hit with creepy Shrek memes sent by an anonymous individual that they never discovered who actually was.

That's...a pretty interesting origin story for a movie. Talking serious I found this film to be pretty fun. The concept is really original yet simple and the movie executes it pretty well. The mystery was pretty interesting with well-built tension, and the editing was used in a really great and cool way to represent the lead character's paranoia throughout the incident. There wasn't a moment that really bored me and I was constantly intrigued to find out who was sending those Drops and messages.

I found the script itself to be servicable enough, though I feel that there was a huge missed opportunity to explore the theme of trauma and abuse in a more prominent way. The film kinda loses you a bit with the last 10 minutes, which I found to be a bit too over-the-top and weirdly unsatisfying. I'd talk more about it but that would require me to talk spoilers and since this is a newer release I'd rather hide that kind of stuff from this review.

Generally speaking this was a surprisingly fun and entertaining thriller that does its job pretty well, even if it doesn't particularly exceed at anything. Genuinely surprised this is in my top 3 films of the year now; I've been a bit dissapointed with a lot of this year's movie output and I haven't found anything amazing as of yet. But maybe a little movie about vampires can change that...

Wow this was actually AMAZING. This is just an absolute triumph in screenwriting. The script is full of clever, sappy and smart dialogue, hilarious jokes, well-balanced moments for drama, constant tension, incredible uses of foreshadowing and call-backs, and amazingly pulled-off twists and turns throughout. The huge yet interconnected cast of characters and the near-anthology format this film goes for should not work--but it somehow does here. It's all the kind of writing that should be teached in the screenplay books.

And even outside the pages of origin, this is also plain and simple a stellarly-directed movie. Tarantino manages to bring it all from every single actor on-screen, as they all manage to embody their respective characters wonderfully, especially when multiple characters share screentime; there wasn't a single character interaction in this movie that I didn't enjoy. And each major character manages to have a moment to shine, whether its with awe-inspiring monologues, with great showcases of emotion, or sometimes both.

The visuals of this film also pair up excellently with the on-screen actors and manage to wholly build the entire vibe of the film. The cinematography in particular always feels careful and intimate whenever the camera follows each character with precision, and the editing does a really good job at making each story and scene feel connected with a same style.

Finally Jesus Christ this film is just a vibe. It's a very similar aesthetic and feeling to Reservoir Dogs with the more down-to-earth and grounded take on the daily lives of criminal people, but the much bigger budget and a more notable directorial confidence make this atmosphere feel more kinetic and above all INVITING. There's a point where the world this movie builds becomes one you never want to leave...in a movie that you might never want for it to end.

I'm so glad I finally watched this movie. It's an experience like never before, managing to create an amazingly genius script AND deliver on its brilliance with excellent direction, performances, and technical coherence. The truth of it all however, is that I cannot think of ANY person who could have done this movie other than Quentin Tarantino. I think I'm already starting to understand why he's so talented in the film industry...

Honestly the best movie of 2025 I’ve seen so far, even if that’s not saying much. I found the screenplay consistently funny, original, and unpredictable, with plenty of cool commentary on love and AI. The performances are surprisingly really good, with Sophie Thatcher being a particular standout with her great physical and convincing portrayal of a lovebot looking to escape her abusive relationship. I also loved Jack Quaid’s character and performance with how he gets progressively villainous as the film goes on. The way the film combines many genres into one is something I always remark as being great and interesting in a movie, with this film in particular having a great array of scary moments, hilarious moments, and dramatically sincere moments—and most of them work really well. While this isn’t anything truly remarkable, it’s definitely an enjoyable, original thriller worth checking out.

Undoubtedly the Nolanest film Nolan has even Nolaned in Nolan films. So much creativity and genius put into the inversion rules established, and they are used incredibly well for the trippy action sequences of the film. Visually the film is extremely impressive, with reverse-motion effects and tricks I never thought were possible in a movie before.

The music and sound is also really cinematic and makes this movie worthy of seeing in a great screen. The pacing helps in the film's entertainment value and runtime, which just flies by despite being 140 minutes. I also think that the film combines the concepts from Memento and Inception to build a brand-new universe and central theme about our perception of reality and belief.

However, much like Dunkirk, I felt a little underwhelmed with the story and character department of this film. Neither the Protagonist or Mickey 19 have a central arc, as most of the emotion is reserved for Kat, who, while an interesting character whose relationship with the villain makes for a clever dynamic I haven't seen in much of Nolan's other films, feels underwritten with her sole motivation of keeping her son; this is officially the first time in a Nolan work where I can actually feel his incapacity to write female characters in a strong manner.

I also feel that the movie becomes too convoluted at times; I'm used to Nolan's scripts being cerebral, complex, and requiring high attention from the viewer, but this film in particular kind of overused the convolutedness a little too much with the amount of cleverness and twists throughout, where not even the smartest viewer will understand everything on the first watch. When you do get to understand stuff better, the experience can become more rewarding, but I still feel like this didn't need to be THAT overstuffed with the twists and turns.

Even with the flaws this movie has, I still think this is a solid, enjoyable action film with an original concept, good execution, and well-intentioning. It could have been better, but I'm generally satisfied with this ambitious Nolan work.

Surprised there isn’t a bigger clash between fans of this and Good Will Hunting. Personally I think Good Will Hunting has stronger performances and a more consistent tone, but this film is still pretty amazing nonetheless.

Captain America yf4g Brave New World, 2025 - ★★½ (contains spoilers) https://letterboxd.jeux1001.com/alexnatorc/film/captain-america-brave-new-world/ letterboxd-review-866824384 Sun, 20 Apr 2025 12:07:06 +1200 2025-04-19 No Captain America: Brave New World 2025 2.5 822119 <![CDATA[

This review may contain spoilers.

Not as bad as many have been saying, but also far from being "brave" or "new" as the subtitle written in Arial might imply. Sam Wilson is enjoyable enough to see as Captain America in a feature-length film, and generally speaking he's simply a likable character you root for in his heroic adventures, even if he doesn't hold a candle towards Steve Rogers. Joaquin Torres is also a nice sidekick, even if he felt very underutilized.

I feel that the grounded political thriller aesthetic they went for with this movie, even if not used as well as in Winter Soldier, does make for an intriguing enough plot with an interesting mystery and layers that makes the runtime entertaining. A good amount of the action sequences are also surprisingly good; the creative usage of Captain America and Falcon's wings and the way they integrate them into the fight choreography was really fun and the highlights of the action. There's also a few decent attempts at adding heart and sincerity into the characters and the journey they're in that I can appreciate in any movie.

Sadly that's where my positives go away with this movie. The main word I'd use for this movie is just...underwhelming. While many of the action scenes were good, there were also a lot of dull and uninteresting fight moves and choreography, such as bland punching and general moves that don't make usage of the heroes and villains' skills and traits, that scale the scenes back from greatness. The main villain was awful because of his lack of screentime and no good usage of his "high-intelligence" powers.

Talking about the villain also brings me to talking about Thaddeus Ross / Red Hulk, who was easily the most conflicting part of the movie for me. On one hand, I really liked how they wanted to give him an arc and development regarding his world reputation and complicated relationship with Betty, but what kills the character in this movie for me though is the fact that he isn't played by the same actor as in his previous appearances in the franchise (RIP William Hurt by the way).

The problem with the (necessary) recast is that a lot of this Ross' story DEPENDS on his past appearances in the MCU and what he did in them, and in said appearances, he was played by a specific actor in a specific way, building a specific character. In this film, Harrison Ford's Thaddeus Ross never feels like the Thaddeus Ross William Hurt played, even though the two are supposed to still be the same character. So the recast prevents me from fully buying into Ross developing from his actions in the past as a character here; obviously the circumstances of this recast are understandable, but it still hurts the script they were planning going in on this movie and the handling of Ross.

In of other problems I have with this film, the attempts at humor is just not great. I don't despise the MCU's sense of humor, but I despise how they ALWAYS have to shoehorn a humor line during serious moments; whenever it's "since when they are red?" or "well that didn't work", this kind of casual danger dialogue (name according to TV Tropes) is almost never funny and just becomes stale and forced.

The CGI is also a mixed bag; sometimes it makes for convincing action set pieces and gorgeous shots, but other times it becomes overused in addition to simply not looking good; the Red Hulk's appearance works during the dynamic action sequences, but then there's other portions such as in his transformation where he looks laughably bad.

I feel that both this CGI and some of the more dissapointing action scenes of the film can be faulted with the production budget they were going for; I don't like when movies use unecessarily massive budgets, but even the low budgets should be used well, and I don't think $180 million isn't enough to have an actual shot of Red Hulk transforming back to normal Ross rather than just showing a silhuette of the de-transformation before a cut to shirtless Harrison Ford.

There's also a lot of notable instances of choppy editing throughout the film, especially in the most random action scenes. It makes the movie look inconherent at times. You can clearly feel it was a movie that was substantionally reshot and reworked; I'm tired of this practice happening lately with major blockbusters.

While this movie is watchable enough and isn't the worst I've seen of the MCU in the last 4 years, it's also just a painfully mediocre and scaled-back film that gives me no hope for the MCU being back; let's face it, no matter if they pull an amazing movie out of a sudden, as a franchise it might never recover from over-saturation and mismanagement under the state it's in.

Oh, and the post-credits scene sucked.

The kind of movie that makes you go, "I've never seen anything like this before". This film is so unconventional and unique in both its script and format (of how the entire plot is constructed from the memories of the soldiers who fought in Iraq with no other fictional elements in play) that I can do nothing but give a bravo for the bold swing the filmmakers did for this film. The amount of realism concerning the activities from the soldiers and the real live nature of the war itself is truly something I never realized I hadn't seen in a movie before; no made-up stuff, no dramatization, just the truth of real life, presented in a medium usually reserved for escapist, fictionally-oriented entertainment.

But in order to enhance the claustrophobic feeling of being in a war and getting trapped in a hopeless, troubled situation, there must also be both a visual and sensory vibe working around. Because the soundwork of this film is SO amazing, so visceral, so overloading, so shocking...it justifies the entire ticket price of seeing this movie in theaters. So glad I got to experience a sensory experience like THAT in that theater room with those big loud speakers. But the cinematography of this movie is also great, with a combination of still shots, close-up shots, detailed shots, and plain beautiful shots that help every scene give the message and feeling it wants you to get through and through.

Unfortunately, much like with Nickel Boys and its experimental POV storytelling, the bold gimmick this movie goes for also pulls it back from greatness as much as it elevates it. Having 90 minutes of straight war play out in real-time just like it happened in real life was never gonna allow actual character development or plot layers, and this made the film hard for me to connect with emotionally at times. And inevitably, the realism of having the soldier activities be as extended as possible with little additional dialogue/tension going on can make those scenes pretty boring to watch and dragged on.

Ultimately though, Warfare manages to do the best it can with the unique script and style it aims for. It will very clearly not be for everyone, but if you're open to an original film with an original way of storytelling and subversive approach to war films (and if you want a worthy sensory theatrical experience that isn't helmed by Christopher Nolan), then you might enjoy this movie quite a bit. Gotta watch Civil War now.

I was so ready to call this overrated but man did this hit hard by the end. People tend to debate if it was either Tom or Summer who was in the wrong all along, but the reality is that it was all just "coincidence" that led to the relationship going the path it ended up going. Really subversive and moving experience that surprised me for how deep it was.

It’s too bad my (3D) screening was that empty. Was genuinely interested in how a huge audience would have reacted to the chicken jockey scene—

Fun time in the theater to be sure, especially if you’re bringing your family or friends in for the ride, but as an individual film this isn’t the best. A non-stop array of tired film cliches, tropes and predictability, underdeveloped characters, weak main conflict and villain, and especially a very inconsistent sense of humor.

Said humor consists of lots and lots of intentionally cringe-inducing awkward jokes not unlike the director’s works of the past, gags that can provoke a laugh if you’re in the highest mood possible but that can also just leave you in pure second-hand embarrassment.

There’s also a ridiculously high amount of out-of-place and pointless scenes and subplots that could have easily been trimmed out of the final cut of the film, especially the one subplot regarding a relationship between Jennifer Coolidge and the Villager which, while mildly funny, also didn’t do enough to justify its existence within the film and story proper.

It almost feels that the film was messed around in the editing room quite frankly, with the backstory scene in the beginning being the biggest hint towards this having been the case due to how rushed and awkward it’s presented.

Regardless of every flaw this film commits, I wouldn’t call it a bad time of a movie at all. There’s clearly some sort of weird charm within this cringe-inducing mess that I can see why this might work to some people, and as I mentioned earlier, the humor might work to some if you just don’t take it all too seriously.

Genuinely speaking, I appreciate the attempts at giving each character an arc and special skill within this adventure, even if said attempts are extremely cliched and are findable in whatever Disney Channel movie you can watch. I feel that the acting performances themselves, while nothing remarkable, do work well enough within this movie’s tone and style.

Probably the biggest compliment I can give to this movie is the visuals, which manage to represent the Minecraft world in a way that’s really colorful and interesting while we live in a world where tons of movies fail visually with so much unnecessary grey tinting.

The CGI itself is also genuinely amazing; the green screen on the live-action humans looks awful and distracting, but the amount of effort brought to making the Minecraft world, its environment, and its creatures look as great as possible is undeniable; say what you want on the general live-action/ realistic look of the world and how it was adapted visually, but it does look realistic and convincing.

Generally speaking, even saying this as a casual Minecraft player, I think they remained faithful to the game pretty well, carrying over a lot of its key rules and objects in a way that felt applicable and fun for a film; genuinely got some good Mario movie vibes from the way they played the game elements out.

In conclusion, I feel that the style for this movie they were going for can be enjoyed by certain audiences, but ironically for a game that promotes creativity, the script isn’t creative in the slightest. It’s pretty clear why this is making a billion dollars at the box office though.

Much more of a twisted political satire than Parasite was, though one with a messier script and insufficient pacing to boot. I can see the underlying themes of humanity throughout, and the general direction, acting performances (especially Pattinson and Ruffalo), humor, visual effects, and political commentary were all pretty good, but I feel that some small details in the screenplay were missing for the story to reach its maximum potential, specifically in the ending.

Way too many scenes felt random and inconsequential to the overall story, the pacing was a bit too slow, and some of the narration got a little overused to the point of becoming a lazy method of exposition. Overall this is a good and audacious movie, and I do love that Bong kept his directorial artistry under the Hollywood machine, but I'd be lying if I felt this didn’t come together as well as it could have been. Gotta keep processing this one. My grade could go slightly up upon further reflection.

I still when I was 10 years old, back when I didn't watch any movies that looked violent/scary or were rated above PG, watching the Academy Awards of 2020. I was expecting something popular like 1917, Joker, or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to win Best Picture. I was used to seeing the big, American Hollywood darlings be the films that would thrive in theaters, audiences, and naturally awards. Or at least, that was the only kind of cinema that I identified was well-known and received.

So when it was time to present Best Picture at those Oscars, I still watching Jane Fonda's unusually long pause when reading the envelope. Then came the big surprise: a lesser-seen foreign film I hadn't heard about that much, name was Parasite, won the award. The first foreign-language film to win Best Picture.

I being genuinely mad at this win (even with the fact that I didn't actually watch a single of the actual BP nominees that year at the time) and even wanted the announcement to be revealed to be a mistake like what happened with La La Land's faux win in the 2017 ceremony. I was just blindsided at the time of my expectations not being met, My expectations of the usual Hollywood-produced, marketed-to-the-masses film production to win film's biggest annual recognition, not met. And I'm sure I wondered: what made this random foreign film thrive so much? What was so special about it?

...and then 5 years after that ceremony shock, I finally sat down and watched this movie, and boy every single complain I had that night, blown out of proportion. The moment the movie ended that day, I felt awe and inspiration from what I had just watched. I had come to a realization that 10-year old me, who also dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, probably should have know: that really, cinema isn't and shouldn't be restricted towards the popular Hollywood bubble.

Cinema is expansive, and can be so much more. It can be produced in different countries. It can come from any voice no matter race, nation, or general orientation. It can grab all sorts of genres and tropes and blend them explosively into a wholly original concept. It can teach you things you never knew you needed to learn and in ways you never knew could teach. It can be funny. It can be dramatic. It can be impactful. It can just be...masterful.

So what was the unique voice behind this movie? Bong Joon-ho, in South Korea. His voice, his style of filmmaking, his (co-)writing, his directing, and his knowledge are all the things that build this movie. The result of an unusual voice? A complex, subversive masterpiece that delivers in everything you could hope for in a movie and so much more.

A movie with constant new themes and ideas to dig out, new jokes to laugh at, new reactions to the biggest moments to experience, new elements to appreciate. The first watch is a true roller-coaster as you see the story unfold for the very first time. The second time might not have that same first-discovering magic, but it does give you the opportunity of brand new discoveries that you might not have caught the first time. Elements that might seem small, but add so much more into the film.

Ironically for a movie where a character dislikes when someone else crosses the line, this is a movie that absolutely crosses the line with what its trying to do and them some. This is just the kind of movie with so much care into nearly every single element and ends up working amazingly in all of it, all formulating into a true, timeless cinematic masterpiece.

10-year old me had a bad taste in cinema, man. If you realize the things I liked back then...

The first two acts were good and enjoyable, but the third act is what really boosted this movie up for me. It really demonstrates how tragic this child's story is with how he spent so much of his life idiolizing war and evil, and doesn't learn that what he's standing up for is wrong until it's too late. Aside from this surprisingly compelling and interesting story, the film is elevated by its incredible performances, hilarious absurd humor, great scenery and editing, and unique direction. I was expecting this movie to be good and it definitely was, but not in the way I expected at all -- and I say that in the best way possible.

This wasn't quite as mindblowing as the first time I saw this, but c'mon this is still far too peak. Great story, excellent action, incredible visual effects even by today's standards, spectacular performances, and a moving and impactful message about humanity and fate. Out of ANY overexploited film franchise, THIS is the one that did not need any sequels at all.

(One note though: the director's cut is even better than the theatrical one. On prime video they included the theatrical version and I got frustrated at the removal of many little moments that I feel nontheless that added a lot to the story, such as the Kyle Reese dream sequence and the additional scenes of Dyson and his family. The main cut is still amazing though, but the director's cut also adds much more to the film.)

All 15 Illumination Movies Ranked! (w/ Despicable Me 4) 5041u https://letterboxd.jeux1001.com/alexnatorc/list/all-15-illumination-movies-ranked-w-despicable/ letterboxd-list-34208427 Tue, 6 Jun 2023 10:53:20 +1200 <![CDATA[
  1. Despicable Me

    Their only great one

  2. Sing 2

Only saw it once but it sure is truly Illumination’s best film since the first Despicable Me (even if that title has been overused a lot recently)

  3. The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Got worse since I watched it for the first time in theaters, but come on it’s still such a blast!

  4. Despicable Me 2

    Overhated

  5. Sing

Kinda gets worse as the years go on, but it still quite stands out at its own in this majorly mediocre crowd of movies.

  6. Minions: The Rise of Gru

How come only half of Illumination’s 14-film catalogue is actually decent enough??

  7. Migration

I don’t get why people are calling this “Illumination’s best movie” when it’s STILL just okay??

  8. The Lorax

Has to rewatch it a couple of months ago for school homework

  9. The Grinch

For some reason kind of a Christmas movie in my house, except it’s not very good!

  10. The Secret Life of Pets 2

Only saw it once when it hit digital back in 2019. But from what I’ve seen in reviews from YouTubers, I don’t expect it to be good if I ever watch it again.
