This is absolutely charming silly bollocks and I loved it!

Jack Black is perfectly cast and bouncing of the Minecraft universe with an effortless ease.

As a Disney adult I really tried to get on board with this, but alas I couldn’t overlook the chaos that is, and has been this film.

There’s a conflict that exists between the dwarfs and the mere presence of the bandits (originally the “magical creatures” that makes this feel like two scripts clumsily merged together in a manner that is as unsatisfying as it is clunky - making this film run 30 minutes longer that its source material without justification.

Gatdot and Zegler are broadly fine in the film (the press however - flip me!) and it feels as though they didn’t want to be there at the same time with certain scenes feeling more phoned in than others.

This begs the question - are Disney losing their magic and has the era of lives action remakes ended on a remarkable low?

Hopefully LILO and Stitch can restore some much needed faith to this once great studio.

This was the first film I ever saw in the cinema and as such it holds a very special place in my heart.

Despite its glaringly obvious flaws - like how is a family this large able to fly from Chicago to Paris at Christmas without selling a kidney?  Why weren’t social services immediately notified and involved in this case of childhood abandonment?

The final act is, essentially a proof of concept for what would become the SAW films!

In 1988 parent across the globe thought “Wow - this has dinosaurs in, the kids will love it”. A mere 68 minutes later those same parent are driving home in awkward silence hoping there’s a qualified therapist in their local area.

Littlefoot and his merry gang take us on an adventure that’s as heartwarming and charming as it is terrifying - yet another reminder as to why Don Bluth enriched a generations childhood to levels beyond “just cinema”.

This film is utterly heart wrenching in and of itself - then once you learn the story behind the movie “Goodbye Charlie” becomes even more meaningful, reducing me to tears every single time.

Though equally this is a film that taught an entire generation of film lovers that theirs beauty in pain and joy in sorrow. It’s not sadness for the sake of sadness - it’s possess a level of emotional intelligence that resonates with all audiences irrespective of how old you are - a testament to Don Bluth and his abilities as a film maker.

There’s a reason this is in my Letterboxd Top 4.
