First hour is clunky as hell. Some of the sloppiest exposition and storyboarding in recent memory. It had me worried it was going to be a total dud
But it really redeemed itself in the second half. Still not anywhere close to the heights on the previous four entries, but far from the crushing disappointment some people seem to think it is.
Aronofsky isn’t necessarily wrong in his assessments of the main issues at play here. For all intents and purposes, he’s diagnosing the right problems. I don’t know if I can confidently say his “heart is in the right place” because from what I gather from him, he’s a man with a very complicated relationship with religion.
He often points towards a higher power through his art, and is clearly interested in his own mortality and the things we leave behind…
